life and career

Childhood and youth

Sabine Lisicki 2007 in Berlin

Lisicki, whose parents came from Poland as resettlers in 1979 , began playing tennis at the age of seven. She was initially trained by her father Richard, a sports scientist with a doctorate who worked as a tennis coach in Eckenhagen . There she also attended elementary school, after which she attended the Wüllenweber grammar school in Bergneustadt for a year and a half . At the age of 10 she played for Rot-Weiß Troisdorf. In 2003 she moved with her parents to Berlin, where she joined the LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin . In 2004, she defeated at the WTA tournament in Berlin , among others Cara Black  - then at least the number 2 of the double world rankings and gained his first experience on the ITF Women's Circuit . The following year she had to take a long break after a stress fracture in her foot. In 2007 she won her first ITF titles in Jersey and Toronto . In favor of her career, she left high school after completing secondary school.

2008

At the beginning of 2008 Lisicki was finally able to establish herself on the WTA Tour when she survived the qualification at the Australian Open . In the first round she defeated the 16 seeded Dinara Safina 7: 6, 4: 6 and 6: 2, in round two the Ukrainian Marija Korytzewa . In the third round she met the then 17-year-old Caroline Wozniacki , to whom she had to admit defeat despite a 6: 4, 4: 2 lead.

In February 2008 she appointed team boss Barbara Rittner to the German Fed Cup team . On her debut in La Jolla , she got the only point for the German team in the first round encounter against the USA (1: 4 defeat). Lisicki defeated the former world number one Lindsay Davenport 6: 1, 7: 5, before she was narrowly defeated by Ashley Harkleroad in the second individual .

On the way to the last sixteen in Key Biscayne she beat Anna Tschakwetadze for the first time from the top 10. In the opening match of her "home tournament" in Berlin, she won against number 18 in the world, Shahar Peer , in straight sets. Despite her elimination after a close match against Sybille Bammer in round two, she replaced Martina Müller as the best German tennis player with 89th place in the world rankings on May 12, 2008 . At the French Open she came with a two-set success over Jelena Wesnina in the second round, where she was defeated by Ágnes Szávay, who was in 12th position . After five first round defeats in a row, she reached the quarter-finals in Cincinnati , which she lost in three sets against the third-placed Maria Kirilenko . At the US Open she came with a victory over María José Martínez Sánchez in the second round, in which she was defeated by Aljona Bondarenko in three sets. In October Lisicki was at the Tashkent Open for the first time in the final of a WTA tournament, which she lost to Sorana Cîrstea 6: 2, 4: 6 and 6: 7 4 .

2009

In January she competed for Germany at the Hopman Cup in Perth alongside Nicolas Kiefer . The end came in the preliminary round, however, as Kiefer had to give up due to an injury. In April Lisicki won her first WTA tournament. At the Family Circle Cup in Charleston , she triumphed 6: 2, 6: 4 over Caroline Wozniacki in the final. In the entire tournament, she did not give a single set, not even against the former world number one Venus Williams . In the Fed Cup game against China at the end of April , she won both singles (against Zheng Jie 6: 4, 2: 6, 6: 4) and doubles with Anna-Lena Grönefeld (against Zheng Jie and Peng Shuai with 4: 6, 7: 5, 6: 2). The team removed with a 3: 2 win promotion to the World Group I. In the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart Lisicki defeated at the beginning Patty Schnyder with 6: 4, 6: 3, but then lost to the set of 3 Jelena Janković with 5: 7, 7: 5 and 3: 6. The third round match of the Estoril Open against Anna-Lena Grönefeld had to give up Lisicki injured when the score was 2: 6. Before that she had won against Kirsten Flipkens 6: 2, 6: 2 and against Jelena Bowina 6: 4, 7: 5.

At the French Open she was eliminated in round one with 2: 6, 6: 1, 1: 6 against Lucie Šafářová . At the AEGON International in Eastbourne on grass she lost both first round encounters, in the singles against Samantha Stosur with 2: 6, 1: 6 and in the doubles together with Ana Ivanović against the ranking first Cara Black and Liezel Huber . At Wimbledon , she beat Anna Chakwetadze, who was seeded 32, 4: 6, 7: 6, 4 , 6: 2. In the second and third round she was able to defeat Austrian Patricia Mayr (6: 2, 6: 4) and Svetlana Kusnezowa (6: 2, 7: 5) who were seeded at 5 . In the last sixteen she beat Wozniacki again (6: 4, 6: 4) before losing to world number one Dinara Safina with 7: 6, 5 , 4: 6 and 1: 6. The hard court tournaments in the USA and Asia were disappointing due to numerous injuries, especially in the shoulder area. The US Open was also over for her after the second round. In Luxembourg , Lisicki advanced to the final, which she lost against the Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 2: 6, 5: 7. At the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions she did not get beyond the group stage at the end of the year with a win and a loss. In 2009, Sabine Lisicki was awarded the “ German Tennis Prize ” by the German Tennis Association in the “Professional female” category for outstanding achievements and successes in the past season.

2010

Due to a persistent ankle injury on her left foot (Lisicki had to give up in Indian Wells and Miami), she was not at the start between late March and early August. After a four-and-a-half month break, she lost her opening match in Cincinnati against Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu in straight sets as well as her first-round match against Kristina Barrois at the Bronx Open, an ITF tournament. After a smooth two-set win over the American Coco Vandeweghe , she was eliminated from the US Open in round two against Wera Swonarjowa, who was in 7th position .

2011

At the ASB Classic in Auckland, Lisicki reached the second round after victories over Sania Mirza (qualification) and Florencia Molinero , where she was defeated by Yanina Wickmayer in three sets. The third round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami was over. At the French Open she was defeated again in the second round Swonaryova in three sets, with a match point in the third set when the score was 5: 2. During this match, she exhausted herself to the point of exhaustion, so that after the game she had to be taken from the field by helpers lying on the floor on a stretcher (the cause was stated to be gluten allergy ). At the preparatory tournament for Wimbledon in Birmingham , Lisicki advanced to the semi-finals with a hard-fought two-set win over Magdaléna Rybáriková , where she also defeated Peng Shuai (6: 3, 6: 1). In the final she was able to defeat Daniela Hantuchová just as clearly (6: 3, 6: 2) and thus celebrate her second success on the WTA Tour.

In Wimbledon , Lisicki promoted Li Na , who had previously triumphed as the first Asian woman in Paris, in the second round 3: 6, 6: 4, 8 after a 6: 1, 6: 1 opening win over Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia : 6 out of the tournament. With an effortless win over Misaki Doi and another two-set win over Petra Cetkovská (7: 6 3 , 6: 1) she reached the quarterfinals. There she beat Marion Bartoli 6: 4, 6: 7, 4 and 6: 1 and made it into the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career and as the first German since Steffi Graf (1999). After Zheng Jie (2008), Lisicki was only the second player to reach the semi-finals with a wildcard at Wimbledon. There, number 5 on the seeding list, Marija Sharapova , got the upper hand with 6: 4, 6: 3. In the doubles semifinals, however, Lisicki and her partner Samantha Stosur beat Tamarine Tanasugarn and Marina Eraković 6: 3, 4: 6, 8: 6 and qualify for the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. There the duo Květa Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik lost 3: 6, 1: 6.

At the start of the hard court season, she reached the semi-finals at the WTA tournament in Stanford , but lost there clearly against the eventual winner Serena Williams. The following week, she reached the quarter-finals in San Diego , where she had to admit defeat to third-placed Swonaryova in three sets. At the WTA tournament in Cincinnati, she lost her opening match against Shahar Peer 4-6 and 6-7, after having fought her way up to 5-6 in the second set after a 5-0 deficit. At the WTA tournament in Dallas , where she was seeded number 5, she underlined her form when she stormed into the final without losing a set and with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Aravane Rezaï, her third individual title on the tour secured. At the US Open Lisicki made it to the round of 16, but was defeated there again in two sets to Wera Swonaryova.

2012

At the tournament in Auckland , she had to give up her quarter-final match against Angelique Kerber . At the Australian Open she lost to Maria Sharapova 6: 3, 2: 6, 3: 6 in the round of 16. In the Fed Cup match against the Czech Republic , she surprisingly lost both singles (three set defeats to Iveta Benešová and Petra Kvitová ). In Doha, she was already defeated by Angelique Kerber 6: 4, 4: 6, 1: 6 at the start. At the WTA tournament in Dubai Lisicki reached (after a bye in round one) with a victory over Iveta Benešová (6: 3, 6: 3) the quarter-finals, where she had no chance against Agnieszka Radwańska . At the French Open , the end came in round one. After several defeats in the opening rounds , Lisicki was able to survive the first round in Wimbledon for the first time. She moved into the round of 16, where she clearly defeated the top seeded world number one Sharapova in two sets. In the quarterfinals she lost to Kerber. At the Olympic Games in London Lisicki competed in singles and together with Kerber in doubles. In the individual, she was eliminated in the last sixteen against Sharapova in just three sets. Lisicki and Kerber won their opening game in doubles, but had no chance in the round of 16 against the later gold medalists Serena and Venus Williams . In mixed she competed with Christopher Kas , with whom she had not yet played a match. After two wins, they lost to Laura Robson and Andy Murray in three sets in the semi-finals . In the match for bronze they had to admit defeat, against the Americans Lisa Raymond and Mike Bryan they lost 3: 6, 6: 4, [4:10].

2013

2013 at the French Open

At the beginning of the year Lisicki met the world number one Wiktoryja Asaranka at the tournament in Brisbane in round two , to whom she lost 3: 6, 3: 6. At the Australian Open , she had to compete against number 10 seed Caroline Wozniacki. In the entire match, she made 57 avoidable mistakes and, despite a 3-0 lead in the third set, suffered a defeat in the end (6-2, 3-6, 3-6) - it was her earliest elimination in Melbourne.

On January 21, Lisicki announced Ricardo Sánchez as the new coach on her website. At the WTA tournament in Pattaya she was in a final for the first time since April 2011 after victories over Tatjana Maria , Alexandra Panowa , Marina Eraković and Nina Bratchikowa . Until then, she had to give up only one set in the entire tournament (in the quarter-final against Eraković). She lost the final against Marija Kirilenko 7: 5, 1: 6 and 6: 7 1 . In the ranking she improved by twelve places to position 40.

A week later she won her individual in the Fed Cup against Pauline Parmentier 7: 5, 7: 5 and made it 2-0 against France .

In the Bundesliga season 2013 Lisicki competed for the TC Rüppurr . After only three months with Ricardo Sánchez, she switched to coach Robert Orlik in April. Another change took place at the end of May; but they also separated from the Belgian Wim Fissette in September.

In her fifth Wimbledon participation , Lisicki moved into the quarter-finals for the fourth time. In the round of 16 against world number one Serena Williams (6: 2, 1: 6, 6: 4), she lost nine games in a row, but was still able to win the match. It was her fourth win against a current French Open winner at Wimbledon and the second against a world number one. She had previously defeated Francesca Schiavone , Jelena Wesnina and Samantha Stosur. In the quarter-finals she won against Kaia Kanepi in two sets and was in the semi-finals for the second time after 2011, in which she defeated Agnieszka Radwańska 6: 4, 2: 6, 9: 7. As the first German since Steffi Graf in 1999 in the women's singles final at Wimbledon, she had to admit defeat to Marion Bartoli 1: 6, 4: 6. At the US Open Lisicki failed in the third round against Jekaterina Makarowa 4-6 and 5-7.

2014

Lisicki began 2014 in Brisbane with an opening win against Magdaléna Rybáriková ; however, she could not compete for her second round match. At the Australian Open , she was eliminated in the second round in three sets against Monica Niculescu. At the next tournament in Pattaya , she could not contest the second round match due to illness. In Dubai she already failed in round one. At the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells , she was eliminated after a bye in round two. In Miami , she was unable to play for her round of 16 game again, but won the doubles competition alongside Martina Hingis . In Charleston she was out in the round of 16 against Andrea Petković , in Stuttgart she failed in the first round. In Madrid she won two wins in a row for the first time this year before losing to Simona Halep . At the clay court tournament in Rome she did not get past the first round and in Roland Garros she had to give up in the second round against Mona Barthel . A significant increase was achieved with the quarter-finals in Wimbledon . At the following tournament in Stanford , she lost her opening match against Ana Ivanović, but set a new serve world record with 211 km / h. In Montréal she lost in the round of 16. In September she was able to reach a final in Hong Kong for the first time since Wimbledon 2013, in which she defeated Karolína Plíšková .

2015

On June 18, 2015, Lisicki scored 27 aces in the game against Belinda Bencic at the AEGON Classic Birmingham, a new WTA record for most aces in a game. At the US Open she reached the round of 16. After that, she had to pause because of knee problems.

2016

2016 at the Nuremberg Insurance Cup

Lisicki separated from her coach Christopher Kas in May 2016 and only three months later from his successor Salvador Navarro.

2017

In 2017 Lisicki had to sit out for several months due to injuries to his leg and shoulder.

2018

At the end of January 2018, Lisicki was able to return after a knee operation, but fell out again in March due to a foot injury. After the injury break of around three months, Lisicki failed in the qualifying round of the Wimbledon tournament at the end of June . In November 2018 she reached a final at the Challenger tournament in Taipei for the first time in 4 years.

2019

At the end of July 2019, Lisicki took part in the WTA Challenger Karlsruhe and was eliminated in the first round. She is sick with Pfeiffer's glandular fever and therefore has to take a break.

Style of play

Sabine Lisicki has one of the hardest serves in women's tennis. In addition to a precise forehand, she also has a strong backhand with which she can accelerate the ball up to 170 km / h. She prefers playing on grass and hard courts.

Lisicki holds the world record for the fastest serve in women's tennis. At the tournament in Stanford , in the first round game against Ana Ivanović , Lisicki hit on July 29, 2014 at 211 km / h. This record was previously held by Venus Williams with 209 km / h, set in Zurich in 2008. Lisicki had already pitched at 210 km / h at the WTA season finale in Bali on November 6, 2009, in the match against Melinda Czink . However, the measurement was not recognized because it was not carried out by SMT / ISD, the official contractual partner of the WTA.
