Sybille Bammer (born April 27, 1980 in Linz ) is a former Austrian tennis player .

Career

Sybille Bammer started playing tennis at the age of 11, her mother wanted her to do more sports. From 1997 she was a professional player, initially with only moderate success. With the birth of their daughter Tina in 2001, that was to change. At her first appearance after that, on January 27, 2002, she won her first title at the ITF tournament in Grenoble, which was to be followed by eight more ITF titles.

From autumn 2005 Jürgen Waber was her coach. Bammer was finally able to establish itself among the top 30 . She put her big goal of winning a WTA tournament into practice in Pattaya in 2007 . After 17 years she was the first mother to win a WTA tournament again.

After her departure from the tournament in Bad Gastein , Bammer announced her retirement from professional sport on July 14, 2011.

From 2006 to 2009 Bammer played in the German tennis Bundesliga with the first division club TC Rüppurr Karlsruhe , in 2010 and 2011 she was twice German team champion with TC Vacono Radolfzell . After retiring from Radolfzell, she moved to the second division TC Amberg am Schanzl in 2012 , with whom she was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2013; she also played there in 2014 .

2007 season

The year brought Bammer the big breakthrough: semifinals in Hobart , title in Pattaya, then semifinals at the Tier I event (highest category after the Grand Slam tournaments) in Indian Wells . After defeating Ana Ivanović and Tatiana Golovin in the last sixteen and quarter-finals, respectively, she had to beat the number 4 in the world, Svetlana Kuznetsova , in a match lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes 7: 6, 5 , 4: 6, 1: 6 give.

She celebrated her next successes in Amelia Island , where she reached the quarter-finals with impressive results (in three matches she only gave up 11 games). She won over number 3 seeded Daniela Hantuchová from Slovakia in 2 hours 10 minutes with 2: 6, 6: 2, 6: 2 - it was the third win against a top 20 player within a few weeks. In the semifinals she lost against Nadja Petrowa from Russia with 6 4 : 7 and 1: 6.

In Charleston she was eliminated in the round of 16 against Michaëlla Krajicek (half-sister of the former Wimbledon winner), who played with a wildcard, but was able to improve to 25th place in the world rankings.

On the weekend of 21./22. April she played in the Fed Cup . There she was able to win a game for Austria for the first time. On Saturday, as in Charleston, she won against Alicia Molik , on Sunday she defeated Samantha Stosur in straight sets.

The Tier I tournaments in Berlin and Rome in May brought her a victory and a defeat. She had to cancel the tournament in Strasbourg due to illness.

At the French Open she reached the round of 16. With victories over Roberta Vinci , Olha Sawtschuk and Li Na , she achieved the best Grand Slam result of her career so far.

The lawn season was rather disappointing. In Eastbourne she showed an attractive performance against Šafářová , the quarter-finals against Petrowa were lost 7: 6, 5: 7, 4: 6 in an exciting three-set thriller. At Wimbledon , she lost in round two against the American Laura Granville in two straight sets.

The hard court season in the run-up to the US Open was also not to their satisfaction. Bammer had decided this time not to take part in her home tournament in Bad Gastein (where she would have been number one), but to play after Wimbledon in Stanford, California , the first stop in the US Open Series of women. There she reached the semifinals without losing a set, but then failed in three sets against Sania Mirza . The following week she was eliminated in San Diego after a first round win over Kateryna Bondarenko against Ai Sugiyama , whom she had defeated in two straight sets a week earlier. Nevertheless, she was able to improve by one place in the world rankings and, as the fourth Austrian, make it into the circle of the world's 20 best tennis players for the first time. At the WTA tournament in Los Angeles , she was able to easily play her way into the round of 16, where she lost in two sets (2: 6, 1: 6) to Jelena Janković .

In Toronto she reached the last sixteen without any problems, but was eliminated there again against world number three Janković (2: 6, 3: 6). The two defeats also hurt insofar as there would have been a chance to make up a lot of points and thus important places in the world rankings, since she was eliminated in the first round of the last three tournaments of the US Open Series last year. But despite the two rounds of the last sixteen, Bammer was able to consolidate her place among the top 20.

At the last tournament before the US Open in New Haven , she was able to qualify again for the second round after a clear two-set win against Meghann Shaughnessy (6: 4, 6: 2), but failed there after a clear lead (6: 1, 3: 0 - with a break chance to 4: 0) still 6: 1, 5: 7 and 2: 6 to Eleni Daniilidou .

At the US Open , after winning over Tamarine Tanasugarn , Meghann Shaugnessy and Jelena Dementjewa , Bammer was able to reach the round of 16 without losing a set, just like in Paris. There she met again on Janković, against whom she was one to five wins in a direct duel. She lost the match 4: 6, 6: 4, 1: 6 and ended her best season so far in 21st place in the WTA world rankings.

2008 season

Bammer started the year with the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts in Gold Coast , where she was seeded number 7. In round one she lost to the eventual tournament winner Li Na 4: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6 in a close match. Then she defeated Nadja Petrowa (7: 5, 6: 3) for the first time in her opening match in Sydney , but failed in round two to Katarina Srebotnik .

Bammer beat Tamarine Tanasugarn 6: 7, 6: 4, 6: 2 in the first round of the Australian Open ( seeded at # 19) , but then lost clearly to Su-Wei Hsieh (2: 6, 0: 6). In Antwerp followed a first round defeat against Jaroslawa Schwedowa.

At the Qatar Total Open , Bammer celebrated the greatest success of her career so far with her victory over Swetlana Kuznetsova (# 2 in the world), the first victory over a top ten player. The later finalist Wera Swonarewa , to whom she lost 6: 2, 2: 6, 0: 6 , then stopped her run . In Dubai she reached the second round, in which she lost to Francesca Schiavone .

At the Bangalore Open , Bammer was eliminated in the second round with a 6: 7 5 and 2: 6 against Anastassija Rodionowa , after she had already led 5: 2 in the first set.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing she moved into the quarter-finals and had to admit defeat Swonarewa 3: 6, 6: 3, 3: 6.

In the subsequent Grand Slam tournament of the US Open , she also made it into the quarter-finals. There she made many unforced mistakes, so that she finally lost against Jelena Jankovic with 1: 6, 4: 6. At the end of the year she was number 26 in the WTA world rankings.

2009 season

Due to a number of injuries and illnesses, the season didn't start very rosy. When Bammer seemed to get in shape with the quarter-finals in Indian Wells, she had to give up the match without a fight due to a shoulder injury. It was some time before she could get back on the tour. Due to a lack of match practice, she was eliminated from the French Open in round two and at Wimbledon in the first round.

In Prague she won the second WTA title of her career (placed on 2). In the final, she defeated number 1 seeded Francesca Schiavone 7: 6, 4 and 6: 2.

Bammer finished the season in 56th place in the WTA world rankings

2010 season

Her biggest success of the year was the move into the semi-finals in Kuala Lumpur , in which she drew the short straw against Dementjewa in two sets.

2011 season

Wimbledon was actually supposed to be her farewell tournament, but she then took part in the tournament in Bad Gastein - her final final appearance on the tour.

After that she played championship games in Austria and Germany.
