The Eduardo Mondlane University ( Portuguese Universidade Eduardo Mondlane - UEM ) is the oldest university in Mozambique and is based in Maputo .
history
The forerunner to the UEM was founded in 1962 by the Portuguese colonial power in Maputo (then Lourenço Marques ). Her then name was Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique . In 1968 it was renamed Universidade de Lourenço Marques .
After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, a year later it was named after the former leader of the rebel movement Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO), Eduardo Mondlane (1920–1969). In the founding year, the Center for African Studies was set up , headed by Aquino de Bragança until his death.
In 1982, on August 17, the scientist Ruth First was killed by a letter bomb by South African police officers within the university campus in the Centro de Estudos Africanos .
