Career
Junior career: 2001 to 2003
Strýcová, who started tennis at the age of four, was an outstanding junior and number one in the junior tennis world rankings . In singles she won the Australian Open junior competition in 2002 after beating Marija Sharapova in the final and defended the 2003 title against Viktorija Kutuzova . Already in 2001 she won the double competition alongside Petra Cetkovská and won the Banana Bowl with her compatriot in the same year . Together with Anna-Lena Grönefeld , she then triumphed at the Orange Bowl and the following year at the Trofeo Bonfiglio , where she also secured the individual title. In 2002 she also won the youth tournament of the French Open , also together with Grönefeld, and triumphed at Wimbledon , there alongside Elke Clijsters .
Early successes: 2003 and 2004
At the same time, Strýcová started on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2002 and won her first two professional titles in the $ 25,000 category that same year. In 2003 she made her debut at the Australian Open in qualifying a Grand Slam tournament, but was eliminated in the second round. At Wimbledon , she then successfully qualified for the main round for the first time, but lost to Tetjana Perebyjnis in the first round with 9:11 in the extension of the third set. At the Australian Open 2004 , after a two-set win against Arantxa Parra-Santonja , she survived the opening round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time before she was beaten by Lina Krasnoruzkaja in the following match . At the Tier I tournament in Indian Wells , she then made it to the round of 16, in which she was stopped by Justine Henin -Hardenne. Towards the end of the season she reached her first semi-final on the WTA tour in Guangzhou and won her first ITF title in the $ 50,000 category in Saint-Raphaël , which made her the first time in the top 100 of the world rankings.
Years of search for forms: 2005 to 2009
But instead of working his way up the ranking, Strýcová fell back significantly in the following year after weaker performances that dragged on over the entire 2006 season. Only in doubles did she get her first two WTA titles in 2005: in Warsaw alongside Tetjana Perebyjnis and in Rabat with Émilie Loit . It was not until 2008 that Strýcová managed to return to the top 100 in the world rankings, after having made it into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time from qualifying after three titles in the $ 25,000 category on the ITF Tour, at Wimbledon . in which she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova . In addition, she celebrated her third double title with her compatriot Iveta Benešová in Stockholm . At the end of the 2009 season, in which Strýcová only convinced at WTA level in Acapulco by reaching the semifinals, she was back in shape on fast indoor surfaces. She was victorious at the WTA tournament in Québec at the side of Vania King and won her fifth title in Luxembourg together with Iveta Benešová. At the end of the season, she won her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Ortisei, and another one in the $ 50,000 category the following week in Ismaning .
Consolidation among the top 100: 2010 to 2013
In 2010 Strýcová was in her first individual final on the WTA tour in Prague . Although she had to admit defeat to Ágnes Szávay there, she was listed in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time the following week. In the double ranking she achieved after tournament victories in Paris and Monterrey as well as her first success at a tournament in the Premier 5 category in Tokyo , each alongside Benešová, the success in Linz with Renata Voráčová and another title win in Acapulco , together with Polona Hercog , at the end of the season even the top 20 in the world rankings. In 2011 she got into the third round for the first time in Melbourne at the beginning of the year , in which she failed against Li Na , before she won her first WTA individual title after a semi-finals in Båstad , in Québec after a three-set win in the final over Marina Erakovic . She was also successful in doubles with Iveta Benešová. The two defended their title in Monterrey and won in Sydney , Barcelona and Luxembourg . She also won together with her compatriot Klara Zakopalová in 's-Hertogenbosch .
2012 Strýcová achieved their third WTA individual final in Palermo . There she was clearly defeated by Sara Errani in two sets, but was able to win the doubles title alongside Renata Voráčová. In Stuttgart she won her last title together with Benešová. On October 16, 2012, a routine doping test was carried out at Strýcová during the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open and it turned out positive; The substance sibutramine was detected in her blood . On February 14, 2013, it was banned for six months retrospectively from October 16, 2012. After her suspension, Strýcová immediately won an ITF tournament in the $ 75,000 category in her third tournament appearance in Trnava and moved into the second round in London after successful qualification and a first round win over Magdaléna Rybáriková , in which she was eliminated by Zwetana Pironkowa . Despite the forced break from the tournament, she was able to finish the year in the top 100 of the world rankings for the sixth time in a row.
Rise to the expanded world elite: 2014 to 2017
After a mixed start to the year, Strýcová reached the final in Birmingham , in which she was defeated by top seed Ana Ivanović , and then advanced to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon , after she beat Ni La in the second round first win against a player from the top 10 in the world rankings; in the round of the last eight she lost to the eventual winner Petra Kvitová . She then reached the quarter-finals in New Haven and scored the third round at the US Open and Wuhan , before missing her second WTA individual title against Annika Beck at the end of the season in the final of the tournament in Luxembourg . Nevertheless, she ended the year in the top 30 of the ranking for the first time. In addition, she was able to advance to the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament in New York at the side of Kimiko Date -Krumm for the first time in a double, in which she was defeated by the eventual winners Yekaterina Makarova and Jelena Wesnina . At the beginning of 2015, after a strong start with the semi-finals in Auckland , a quarter-finals in Sydney , the entry into the third round in Melbourne and a subsequent semi-final in Antwerp , Strýcová made it into the top 20 in the world, even if they were behind in the ranking fell back to 41st place in a significantly weaker second half of the season. In addition, she was at the Australian Open together with Michaëlla Krajicek again in a Grand Slam semi-final, but she also lost this against Chan Yung-jan and Zheng Jie .
In 2016, Strýcová reached the round of 16 in Melbourne after defeating the world number three Garbiñe Muguruza , in which she had to admit defeat to Wiktoryja Asaranka . Then she made it to the final in Dubai , but had no chance there against Sara Errani . After reaching the fourth round of Indian Wells and the quarter-finals in Rome , she made it into the final for the second time since 2014 in Birmingham , where, as in Rome, she was defeated by Madison Keys . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she reached the second round in the individual competition after defeating Yanina Wickmayer , in which she was again beaten by Sara Errani. In doubles , she and Lucie Šafářová prevailed in a purely Czech duel for third place against Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká and won bronze. Towards the end of the season she reached another quarter-finals in Wuhan and finished the year in the top 20 of the individual world rankings for the first time. She was also successful in doubles in 2016 and celebrated alongside Sania Mirza with triumphs at the tournaments in Cincinnati and Tokyo and together with Karolína Plíšková further great successes in doubles.
After moving into the semi-finals in Sydney at the start of the 2017 season, Strýcová achieved her highest position in the world rankings with 16th place. At the Australian Open as well as in Miami she reached the round of 16, in Eastbourne and Tokyo , where she was able to land another victory against a top 10 player in the second round with Johanna Konta , she advanced to the quarter-finals. However, she had her best individual results at the end of the season when she reached the quarter-finals at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Beijing after an opening success over the world number one Garbiñe Muguruza, who had to give up due to injury, in which she was first stopped by Petra Kvitová, and then in Linz won their second WTA individual title after more than six years by beating Magdaléna Rybáriková in the final. Through these successes, Strýcová qualified for the first time in 2017 for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where she was eliminated in the group stage after defeating Sloane Stephens and losing to Anastasija Sevastova .
Since 2018: top performance in doubles
After a solid start to the 2018 season, in which Strýcová reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open for the third time in a row, she threw back a series of eight defeats in a row in the world rankings, which she made in Paris with her first entry into the fourth round of the French Open, in which she was defeated by Julija Putinzewa , ended. She then achieved her best individual result in Birmingham , where she only failed in the semi-finals to Magdaléna Rybáriková. In Wimbledon and at the US Open , she came into the third round. Despite stagnating performances in singles, Strýcová played her best season in doubles and triumphed with Hsieh Su-wei in Indian Wells and together with Andrea Sestini Hlaváčková in New Haven and Beijing . Together with her compatriot, she also reached her third Grand Slam semi-final in Paris and qualified for the first time as the third-placed pairing for the 2018 WTA Championships in Singapore at the end of the year . There the two failed, as at the French Open to Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková .
In 2019, Strýcová's individual results became increasingly inconsistent. At the end of the season, she had eleven first-round defeats and four semi-finals, two of which she won at smaller WTA tournaments in Istanbul and Prague . But once again she had her best results on grass, where she first made it into the last four in Birmingham . The 33-year-old celebrated the greatest success of her career when she reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon . After she was able to record her tenth top 10 success in the third round against Kiki Bertens , she prevailed against Elise Mertens and Johanna Konta before she was beaten by Serena Williams in the semifinals . Thanks to the world ranking points achieved in London, she finished a season in the top 50 of the individual rankings for the sixth time in a row in 2019.
In doubles, Strýcová formed a solid pairing with Hsieh Su-wei in 2019. After winning tournaments in Dubai , Madrid and Birmingham , she won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon after winning the final over Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan . On July 15, 2019, Strýcová reached number one in the double world rankings as the 43rd player and held this position for twelve weeks before being replaced by Kristina Mladenovic in October . Although they lost to Mladenovic and Tímea Babos in the final of the WTA Championships 2019 , Strýcová returned to the top of the world rankings between October 2019 and February 2020 and was number one for a total of 27 weeks. Before the 2020 season end due to corona , Hsieh and Strýcová won three more titles in Brisbane , Dubai and Doha . At the Australian Open , the two made it to the final, but failed again because of Mladenovic and Babos.
Fed Cup
In 2002 Strýcová made her debut for the Czech Fed Cup team in a 5-0 win against Canada . Since then, she has contested 33 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 22 (individual balance 11: 7). Between 2011 and 2018, she won the cup with the Czech team six times, with two appearances in the final. In 2015 , she won the 3-2 final against Russia in the decisive double with Karolína Plíšková against Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa and Jelena Wesnina in three sets. In the 2016 final , she made a significant contribution to winning the title by winning the singles against Alizé Cornet and doubles with Plíšková against Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia .
