Markéta Vondroušová (born  June 28, 1999 in Sokolov ) is a Czech tennis player .

Career

Vondroušová, who started playing tennis at the age of four, moved to Prague at the age of 15 to train there. As a junior, the former number one in the junior world rankings celebrated great successes, especially in doubles. In 2014 she won the renowned Orange Bowl alongside Catherine Bellis and reached the finals of the French Open youth competition together with the American . The following year she triumphed in Paris together with her compatriot Miriam Kolodziejová and also won the title at the Australian Open and the Trofeo Bonfiglio , which she won in the individual that same year.

Vondroušová made his debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2014 and won her first professional title the following year. In 2015 she played on the WTA Tour for the first time at her home tournament in Prague after she had received a wildcard from the organizers for the qualification in which she made it to the final round. At the edition of the tournament in 2016 she was even allowed to compete in the main draw and, after an opening win over Océane Dodin, immediately reached the second round, in which she was defeated by Samantha Stosur . Due to an injury to the elbow Vondroušová had to end the season prematurely after participating in the junior tournament of the French Open .

At the beginning of 2017 she returned to the ITF Tour with a streak of 20 wins in a row, including winning the $ 25,000 tournament in Grenoble . After two further finals in low-class ITF tournaments, Vondroušová qualified for the main field at the WTA tournament in Biel and then advanced to the final, in which she beat Anett Kontaveit and thus her first in her second appearance in a WTA main round Title won. She then triumphed in Trnava at an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category and was in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the French Open , also coming from the qualification. There, after an opening win against Amandine Hesse , she went straight to the second round, in which she failed to Darja Kassatkina . At Wimbledon , she then moved into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with her former junior doubles partner Catherine Bellis. After winning another title at an ITF tournament in the $ 75,000 category in her hometown of Prague , she was eliminated in the first round of the US Open and then ended the season in the top 100 for the first time at the end of September. In 2018 Vondroušová reached the second round at the Australian Open for the first time and then advanced to the round of 16 in Indian Wells , where she lost to Petra Martić . This was followed by a changeable phase in which she did not win on grass, but achieved her second WTA semi-final on clay in Gstaad and after a three-set win over Kiki Bertens at the US Open, she even made it into the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time could advance.

In 2019, Vondroušová made his international breakthrough. At first she ensured her best result in doubles at the Australian Open alongside her compatriot Barbora Strýcová by moving into her first Grand Slam semi-final; there the two were only stopped by the later winners Samantha Stosur and Zhang Shuai . In the individual competition she was eliminated in the second round, but reached at least the quarter-finals in her subsequent six tournaments. So she was in the final of Budapest and Istanbul , but lost both finals against Alison Van Uytvanck and Petra Martić. In addition, she moved to the two Premier Mandatory tournaments in Indian Wells , where she was able to record her first win against a top 10 player in the third round against Simona Halep , and Miami into the quarter-finals, before Elina Switolina and Karolína Plíšková had to admit defeat. In Rome , too , she was able to advance to the round of eight, winning her second victory against Simona Halep in the second round, before losing to Johanna Konta in the quarter-finals . Vondroušová celebrated the greatest success of her career so far at the 2019 French Open , where she was the first teenager since Caroline Wozniacki to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2009 US Open . On the way to the final, in which she was defeated by Ashleigh Barty , she defeated, among others, Petra Martić and Johanna Konta, against whom she had lost in preparatory tournaments on clay court. After a first round at Wimbledon , she paused because of a wrist injury that required surgery in September and so put her out of action until the end of the year. Nevertheless, she achieved her highest world ranking position to date with 14th place and ended the year in 16th place.

In 2017 Vondroušová made her debut for the Czech Fed Cup team in the 3-2 semi-final defeat against the USA . Since then, she has played four individual games for her country, three of which she has won. In 2015 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Monika Kilnarová and Anna Slováková . In the final, they beat the team from the United States 2-1.
