Karolína Plíšková (officially Karolína Hrdličková , born March  21, 1992 in Louny , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech tennis player who, like her twin sister Kristýna Plíšková, competes on the WTA Tour . In July 2017, she took over the leadership of the tennis world rankings as the 23rd player .

Career

Plíšková began playing tennis at the age of four, preferring hard courts. On January 30, 2010, she won the Australian Open junior competition . Seeded at number 6, she defeated the unseeded Laura Robson in the final 6: 1, 7: 6 5 .

In 2008 Plíšková won her first ITF tournament, and in 2013 her first WTA title. Also in 2013, she reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon .

In 2014, she reached the second round in both Auckland and the Australian Open earlier this year. At the hard court tournament in Pattaya she was defeated in the final by Ekaterina Makarova in two sets. She lost her second final of the year at the Nuremberg Insurance Cup in three sets against Eugenie Bouchard ; with her doubles partner Michaëlla Krajicek , however, she won the doubles title there. In August she was in the top 50 of the WTA world rankings for the first time in singles and doubles . At the US Open , she reached the third round of singles this time - her best result so far in a Grand Slam tournament, which she then repeated at the Australian Open . In autumn 2014 Plíšková won two WTA tournaments. In Seoul she won against Varvara Lepchenko , in Linz against Camila Giorgi .

In 2015 she was in five WTA finals; she won the tournament in Prague and reached the top ten in the world rankings in August 2015.

Karolína Plíšková has played since 2013 (until 2014 with her sister Kristýna) for the Eckert tennis team , the 1st team of the TC Rot-Blau Regensburg , which after the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga South in the 2015 season for the first time in the Bundesliga was represented. After finishing third in the first season, Plíšková won the title with Regensburg in 2016.

In February 2015 she appeared for the first time for the Czech Fed Cup team ; she won both singles against Canada in Quebec . She has now played 16 Fed Cup games, of which she has won thirteen.

Plíšková's greatest success so far in singles was reaching the finals at the US Open in 2016 . As number 10 on the seeding list, she lost out in the final against Angelique Kerber with 3: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6. Pliskova climbed in the world rankings but in position 6. Among other things, by their strong showing at the Australian Open (quarter-finals) improved it in January 2017 3rd place in Wimbledon eliminated them in the second round, but took over due to the early retirement of Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep took the lead in the world rankings for the first time on July 17, 2017 .

Personal

After a two and a half year relationship, she married the Czech presenter Michal Hrdlička in Monaco in mid-July 2018 . She took his name, but will continue to compete under Plíšková in tennis tournaments.
