Wiktoryja Fjodarauna Azarenka ( Belarusian Вікторыя Фёдараўна Азаранка ; Russian Виктория Фёдоровна Азаренко / Wiktorija Feodorovna Asarenko; English spelling Victoria Azarenka * 31 July 1989 in Minsk , Byelorussian SSR , USSR ) is a Belarusian tennis player . Her greatest successes to date were winning the 2012 and 2013 titles at the Australian Open. In January 2012 she took over the leadership of the tennis world rankings as the 21st player .

Career

Asaranka's early successes include winning the ITF Junior World Champion title, the individual junior title at the Australian Open in 2005, and appearing in the last 16 at the French Open in 2008 and at the US Open in 2007 , where she had to admit defeat to Svetlana Kuznetsova .

In addition, she won the US Open in mixed with Max Mirny in 2007. At the Australian Open , the two lost the final against Jelena Lichowzewa and Daniel Nestor . The following year she reached the double-finals in Melbourne with Shahar Peer .

Since 2005, she has made 19 appearances for Belarus in the Fed Cup . Your match record: 21 wins out of five defeats.

Her greatest successes to date are the two individual titles at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 .

2009

Asaranka was listed in the top 10 for the first time and ended the year in 7th place in the world rankings. She won the tournaments in Miami (final victory over world number one Serena Williams 6: 3, 6: 1), Brisbane (victory over Marion Bartoli ) and Memphis , where she prevailed against Caroline Wozniacki . In Indian Wells came the end in the semifinals against Vera Swonaryova . At the French Open and Wimbledon , she was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later finalists Dinara Safina and Serena Williams.

In doubles, she won the tournaments of Indian Wells (with Vera Swonarjowa) and Memphis (with Caroline Wozniacki). In the final of the French Open she was defeated by Jelena Wesnina to the pairing Anabel Medina Garrigues / Virginia Ruano Pascual .

2010

Asaranka won her fourth WTA tournament in Stanford . She beat Maria Sharapova clearly in the final in two sets. She lost the finals in Dubai and Eastborne to Venus Williams and Yekaterina Makarova, respectively . In the semi-finals in Montreal , she had to give up against Swonaryova after losing the first set in the second due to injury. In Melbourne was against the eventual tournament winner Serena Williams last stop in the quarter-finals.

In doubles, she and Marija Kirilenko won the Cincinnati tournament with a two-set final victory over Lisa Raymond / Rennae Stubbs .

2011

At the Wimbledon grass tournament , Asaranka only gave up a set on the way to the semi-finals at 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 2 over Daniela Hantuchová . There she was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Petra Kvitová in just three sets. Also in Melbourne and Paris she had reached the last sixteen and quarter finals. On September 12th she was third in the WTA world rankings.

At the beginning of May, Asaranka won the WTA tournament in Madrid alongside Marija Kirilenko. In the double competition of the French Open, the two made it to the quarterfinals, where they had to admit defeat to the Americans Huber / Raymond. At the end of July at the hard court tournament in Stanford, they won their third joint title.

2012

With a three-set win over defending champion Li Na in the final in Sydney , she secured her ninth WTA individual title. At the Australian Open she was able to book her first title in a Grand Slam tournament with a 6: 3, 6: 0 final victory over Sharapova. With that she also took the lead in the world rankings . Asaranka then won the tournament in Doha superiorly and without losing a set and two weeks later in Indian Wells for the fourth tournament in a row. With 26 wins in a row, she had the best start to the season in WTA history since Martina Hingis in 1997 - in the Miami quarter-finals, her series ended with a loss to Marion Bartoli. By moving into the semifinals of Wimbledon , where she was defeated by the eventual winner Serena Williams in two sets, she was able to return to the top of the world rankings. At the 2012 Olympic Games , Asaranka won the bronze medal in singles. After being clearly defeated by Serena Williams in two sets in the semifinals , she kept the upper hand against Kirilenko 6: 3, 6: 4. In the mixed competition, Asaranka and Max Mirny won the final against Laura Robson and Andy Murray in three sets. With this gold she won her second Olympic medal.

2013

At the end of January Asaranka defended her singles title at the Australian Open , defeating Li Na in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) in the final. Then she achieved her 17th tournament victory on the WTA Tour at the Qatar Total Open . In the final, she defeated Serena Williams in three sets. It was her first win against Williams in four years to which she still lost the world rankings. Since she was unable to compete in her quarter-final match against Samantha Stosur at the BNP Paribas Open , she fell back to third place in the world rankings for the first time since January 2012. She canceled her start at the WTA tournament in Miami and at the Mutua Madrid Open she failed in the second round. This was followed by a final at the tournament in Rome, where she defeated Sara Errani , among others . She lost the final against Serena Williams straight in straight sets.

At the French Open , Asarenka reached the semifinals for the first time in her career, she lost in three sets against Maria Sharapova. In her first round game at Wimbledon against Maria João Koehler , she sustained a knee injury at the beginning of the second set. She won in two sets, but did not play against Flavia Pennetta in round two.

As the top seed she reached the final at the tournament in Carlsbad after a semi-final victory against Ana Ivanović , which she lost to Stosur in straight sets. It was her first defeat in the ninth duel with the Australian. After Asaranka had canceled the Toronto tournament, she was able to celebrate her second title win of the year at the subsequent tournament in Cincinnati . She defeated Serena Williams 8: 6 in the tie-break of the third set. At the US Open , she met Williams again in the final, to whom she lost 5-7, 7-6, 1-6.

By the end of the year Asaranka only managed one victory. At the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, she lost to Venus Williams in two sets after a bye at the start, in Beijing she failed in the first round to Andrea Petković . At the year-end tournament in Istanbul, she beat Sara Errani, but lost to Li Na and Jelena Janković , so that she missed the semifinals.

2014

Due to a foot injury, she missed five months of the season, including the French Open, and forced her to end it early in September. The season got off to a promising start with a final at Brisbane International , which they lost to Serena Williams in two sets 4-6 and 5-7 . She could not defend her title from the previous year at the Australian Open , here she was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Agnieszka Radwańska with 1: 6, 7: 5 and 0: 6. After the WTA tournament in Indian Wells, where she lost to Lauren Davis in the first round , she took a longer break and only returned to the grass season. However, she did not get any further than the second round at the most, in Wimbledon she lost 3: 6, 6: 3 and 7: 5 against Bojana Jovanovski . In the preparatory tournament for the US Open, she reached the quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup, in which she lost to Agnieszka Radwańska with 2: 6 and 2: 6. At the US Open , she was also eliminated in the quarterfinals. After the WTA tournament in Tokyo , where she lost in the round of 16, she ended her season in 32nd place on the rankings, her lowest place since 2006.

2015

She started the 2015 season with the Brisbane Internationals . Despite a match ball, she lost to Karolína Plíšková 6: 4, 6: 7, 7 and 4: 6 in the first round . At the Australian Open she reached the round of 16, where she lost to Dominika Cibulková with 2: 6, 6: 3 and 3: 6. Her only final of the season she played at the WTA tournament in Doha , where she lost out against Lucie Šafářová with 4-6 and 3-6. On the way to the final, she had beaten three top 20 players with Angelique Kerber , Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams . At the next two tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , she came up to the third round at most. During the clay court season she played in the three top category tournaments ( Madrid , Rome and the French Open ). She made it furthest in Rome with a quarter-finals, where she lost to Marija Sharapova 3: 6 and 2: 6. At the grass tournament in Birmingham , she did not appear in the second round because of a foot injury. At Wimbledon , she made it to the quarterfinals, where she lost to Serena Williams 6: 3, 2: 6 and 3: 6. In the preparatory tournament for the US Open in Toronto and Cincinnati , she reached the last sixteen. And at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year , the quarter-finals came again, this time she lost to Simona Halep with 3: 6, 6: 4 and 4: 6. After the WTA tournament in Wuhan , where she lost to Johanna Konta in the second round , she ended her season.

2016

After two and a half years without winning the title, Asaranka was able to win the Brisbane International with a two-set win over Angelique Kerber . At the Australian Open she failed in the quarterfinals in two sets against the eventual winner Kerber. In March she defeated world number one Serena Williams in the final of Indian Wells . Two weeks later, she also secured the title at the Miami Open with a 6: 3, 6: 2 final win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. At the Fed Cup in April, she contributed two important points to the 3-2 win against Russia with her two wins in the singles . She played the last game before her pregnancy break at the end of May at the French Open , where she had to give up against Karin Knapp in the first round when the score was 3: 6, 7: 6, 6 and 0: 4.

2017

She played her first tournament after birth in Mallorca at the Mallorca Open , where she was eliminated in the round of 16. Also in the round of 16 came the end at the Wimbledon Championships . She could not take part in the US Open because of a custody dispute with the father of her child.

2018

Originally she wanted to start at the WTA tournament in Auckland and the Australian Open , she received a wildcard from the tournament organization at both tournaments, but decided against it because of her ongoing custody dispute. On January 16, 2018, it became known that Asaranka had won the custody battle. Her first tournament of the season was in Indian Wells , where she lost in the second round to Sloane Stephens with 1: 6 and 5: 7. At the following tournament in Miami , she achieved her best performance of the season with a semi-finals. In this semi-final she lost again to Sloane Stephens, this time with 6: 3, 2: 6 and 1: 6. At the French Open she lost in the first round against Kateřina Siniaková 5: 7 twice and in Wimbledon in the second round against Karolína Plíšková 3: 6 and 3: 6. Also in the remaining tournament participations, such as B. at the US Open , she won a maximum of two games in a row. She finished the season in world number 51.

2019

In the first third of the season only won half of her ten games, at the Australian Open she was eliminated in the first round against Laura Siegemund 6: 7, 5 , 4: 6 and 2: 6. At the beginning of April she was back in a final at the WTA tournament in Monterrey , which she gave up against Garbiñe Muguruza when the score was 1: 6 and 1: 3 due to an injury. After the US Open , where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the first round , she ended her season prematurely.

2020

Due to personal reasons, she did not take part in the Australian Open .

Personal

On July 15, 2016, Asaranka announced that she and boyfriend Billy McKeague would be parents at the end of the year. She gave birth to a boy on the night of December 19-20, 2016. In July 2017, the couple separated, which led to a custody battle. This had serious consequences for Asaranka's career: pending clarification, her son was prohibited by a judicial decision from leaving California, where the family lived. Asaranka therefore decided against participating in tournaments of the WTA Tour taking place worldwide . Only after the litigation ended in mid-2018 did she regularly take part in tournaments outside of California.
