The Mutua Madrid Open 2012 was a women's tennis tournament of the WTA Tour 2012 in Madrid ( Spain ). The WTA Madrid was a Premier Mandatory tournament and was played on clay. Blue sand was used for the first time in 2012, which was received rather critically by some players, as the blue sand has different properties than the usual red and the players did not have the opportunity to try out the new surface before the tournament. The tournament took place from May 4th to 13th, 2012 and the prize money totaled 3,755,140 euros . All players in the top 10 of the current tennis world rankings took part in the tournament. The defending champion was Petra Kvitová . In doubles, Viktoria Asaranka and Marija Kirilenko won last year , but they did not compete together this year. Asaranka did not take part in the doubles tournament, and Kirilenko played together with her compatriot Nadja Petrowa . Serena Williams won the tournament against Wiktoryja Asaranka in singles and the Italian duo Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci against Russians Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina in doubles.

qualification

Eight qualifier places were played out for the individual, which entitle them to participate in the main field of the tournament.
