Garbiñe Muguruza Blanco (born October 8, 1993 in Caracas , Venezuela ) is a Spanish tennis player . She achieved her greatest successes to date with the two Grand Slam titles in 2016 at the French Open and in 2017 at Wimbledon . She took over the leadership of the tennis world rankings in September 2017 as the 24th player .
Career
Garbiñe Muguruza was born in Venezuela, from where her mother Scarlet Blanco comes. She also has Venezuelan citizenship. Her father, Jose Antonio, comes from Eibar in the Basque Country . She began tennis in 1998 at the age of five - according to other sources, at three years of age. In 1999 her family moved to Spain, where they saw better conditions for their daughter's athletic development. Muguruza was accepted into the tennis academy of the former world-class player Sergi Bruguera in Barcelona , where she was trained for the following years. She counted the Swiss Martina Hingis and, after her resignation, the American Serena Williams among her role models.
Right-handed Muguruza, who prefers clay courts, plays a two-handed backhand. Your strengths are huge basic strokes and a game full of variations.
2008 to 2012
In 2008 Muguruza first appeared on the WTA Tour in Barcelona after receiving a wildcard from the organizers for qualification and was eliminated in the first round. In the same year she made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and won her first professional title in 2009. In 2011 she won two other tournaments in the $ 25,000 category in Cáceres and Benicarló and reached the final at the $ 50,000 tournament in Mestre . 2012 Muguruza received after another ITF success in a tournament of the $ 25,000 category in Clearwater a wild card for the main draw of the Premier Mandatory tournament in Miami , where she went straight to the last sixteen after she was in the second round with Vera Swonaryova beat a player from the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time and prevailed in the following game against Flavia Pennetta . In the fourth round she was then defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska . In Madrid , too , she was allowed to start in the main field with a wildcard and failed at the start to Li Na . At the French Open , Muguruza was then for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, but was eliminated in the final round. In Bucharest she was then able to celebrate her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category and then climbed to a position in the ranking that allowed her to participate in the main draw of the US Open , in which she was already against in the first round Sara Errani left.
Rise to the top of the world: 2013 and 2014
At the beginning of 2013 Muguruza succeeded in Hobart at the side of her compatriot María Teresa Torró Flor the first triumph on the WTA Tour. At the Australian Open , she then scored her first victory in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament against Magdaléna Rybáriková before being eliminated in the second round by Serena Williams. Muguruza also achieved her best individual results in that season on American hard court, on which she reached the round of 16 at the Premier Mandatory tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , where she recorded her second top win in the second round against Caroline Wozniacki . On grass she advanced to the semi-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time in 's-Hertogenbosch , but Muguruza had to end the season early after reaching the second round at Wimbledon due to an operation on his right ankle. Nevertheless, she ended the year for the first time among the top 100 in the world rankings.
At the start of the 2014 season, Muguruza was able to land her first WTA individual title in Hobart after winning the final over Klára Zakopalová . In Melbourne , after another victory over Caroline Wozniacki, she advanced to the round of 16, in which she was again subject to Agnieszka Radwańska. In her second individual final on the WTA Tour in Florianópolis , this time she lost against Klára Zakopalová in three sets, but was able to win her second double title in Marrakech together with Romina Oprandi . Muguruza finally attracted international attention at the 2014 French Open , when she clearly defeated world number leader Serena Williams in two sets in the second round and stormed into the quarter-finals, where she was only stopped by the eventual winner Maria Sharapova . In the doubles competition , she even made it to the semifinals together with Carla Suárez Navarro , where they were beaten in three sets by the two top seeded Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai . Before that, she and her compatriot had already played in the final in Madrid , which they lost to Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci . In Stanford they won together for the first time at a tournament in the premier category. Towards the end of the season she was in Tokyo again in the semifinals and scored the third round in Wuhan , but could not play her game against Elina Switolina . Due to their increased performance, Muguruza qualified for the first time for the Tournament of Champions in Sofia, where she came to the semi-finals after three wins in the preliminary round over Jekaterina Makarowa , Flavia Pennetta and Alizé Cornet , which she lost to Andrea Petković . She even competed in doubles with Suárez Navarro at the WTA Championships in Singapore. There they failed in the competition for the best eight women's doubles in the quarterfinals again to Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai. In both singles and doubles, Muguruza was able to finish the year in the top 20 in the ranking.
Successes as a top 10 player: 2015 to 2017
In 2015 Muguruza made his international breakthrough. After she reached the round of 16 at the start of the season in Melbourne , she advanced to the semi-finals for the first time in Dubai , which she lost to Karolína Plíšková . At the French Open , like last year, she reached the quarter-finals, in which she had to admit defeat to Lucie Šafářová . Muguruza then achieved her best result of the season at Wimbledon when she entered her first Grand Slam final after a three-set win over Agnieszka Radwańska. There she was defeated by Serena Williams, but still moved into the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time the following week. Together with Carla Suárez Navarro, she triumphed for the first time on grass in Birmingham and then on hard court in Tokyo after they had to admit defeat in the final of their home tournament in Madrid . At the end of the year, Muguruza was in top form again when she first reached the final in Wuhan , in which she had to give up against Venus Williams due to an injury, before she won her biggest title at the WTA in Beijing after winning the final against Timea Bacsinszky Tour. In the individual, she was able to qualify for the first time for the WTA Championships , where she went straight to the semi-finals after three preliminary round successes over Lucie Šafářová, Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitová , in which she was eliminated against Agnieszka Radwańska. In doubles, like in 2014 with Carla Suárez Navarro, she qualified for the tournament of the season's best eight teams. Through two preliminary round victories against jan Yung-Chan and Chan Hao-ching and Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik , they moved first into the semi-finals, they against Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká won before in the final of the world ranking leader Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza defeated were. Muguruza then put her ambitions in doubles on hold and henceforth focused more on her solo career.
After a changeable start to the 2016 season, Muguruza was only able to build on the performances of the previous season on the clay court. She made her first jump to the semifinals in Rome , where she lost Madison Keys before she won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open after a two-set win in the final against Serena Williams. During the entire tournament, she only gave one set in her opening game. Then Muguruza found it difficult to repeat the performance shown. After an early elimination in the second round of Wimbledon , she reached the third round in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in singles , with victories over Andreea Mitu and Nao Hibino , in which she was defeated by the later gold medalist Mónica Puig . She competed in doubles with Carla Suárez Navarro. However, placed in fourth position, the two failed in the quarterfinals to Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina . By the end of the year, she achieved only one more semifinal in Cincinnati , in which she was subject to Karolína Plíšková. As seventh in the world she qualified for the second year in a row for the WTA Championships , but after only one victory over Swetlana Kusnezowa and two defeats against Plíšková and Agnieszka Radwańska this time she was eliminated in the preliminary round.
At the start of the 2017 season, Muguruza reached the semi-finals in Brisbane and then moved into the quarter-finals at the Australian Open , in which she was clearly defeated by Coco Vandeweghe in two sets. After another quarter-final in Indian Wells , in which she failed again in two tiebreaks to Karolína Plíšková, she had to give up in Miami during her four-round game against Caroline Wozniacki because of an infection. What followed was a mixed clay court season in which, after a first round elimination at her home tournament in Madrid in Rome, she reached the semi-finals, in which she had to give up again, this time due to a neck injury. At the French Open she then had to admit defeat as defending champion in the fourth round against Kristina Mladenovic and then fell out of the top 10 in the world rankings. Muguruza then found her strength again on grass and advanced to the semi-finals in Birmingham before she won her second Grand Slam title in Wimbledon with a success in the final against Venus Williams and thus became the first player ever to win both Williams sisters Grand Slam Finals. Only in her win against world number one Angelique Kerber in the fourth round she had to go into a third set. Unlike last year, Muguruza was able to build on winning the title and then triumphed in Cincinnati . On the way to the tournament victory Muguruza first defeated Swetlana Kuznetsova, prevailed in the semifinals after six defeats in a row against Karolína Plíšková and left Simona Halep with a clear 6-1 and 6-0 success in under an hour in the final. It was the first time that Muguruza could win two WTA tournaments within one year. Although she was eliminated in the fourth round against Petra Kvitová at the US Open , she took the top position in the world rankings the following week as the 24th player, which she had to give up to Simona Halep after a first round defeat in Beijing . Nevertheless, she was named ITF World Champion in 2017 and also named Player of the Year by the WTA . In her third participation in the WTA Championships in 2017 , she lost in the group stage to Karolína Plíšková and Venus Williams and was therefore eliminated in the preliminary round despite a win in her opening match against Jeļena Ostapenko .
Persistent form weakness: 2018 and 2019
After an early defeat in the second round of the Australian Open 2018 against Hsieh Su-wei, Muguruza made it to the final in Doha for the first time, in which she was defeated by Petra Kvitová, as well as the semifinals in Dubai . She then moved into Monterrey in her second season finale and won her sixth WTA title by beating Tímea Babos in the final . At the end of a restrained clay court season, she was in the semi-finals at the French Open after defeating Marija Sharapova, but lost there against the eventual winner Simona Halep in two sets. In the second half of the season, Muguruza achieved only one semi-final in nine tournaments in Hong Kong and slipped out of the top ten again. Both in Wimbledon and at the US Open , the end came in the second round. Nevertheless, it was enough to qualify for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where Muguruza moved into the semifinals after two wins in the group phase against Zhang Shuai and Anastasija Sevastova , in which she lost significantly to Wang Qiang and ended the season in 10th place. In the following year, Muguruza's form crisis worsened. Although she defended her title in Monterrey , benefiting from the injury-related abandonment of Wiktoryja Asarankas , she reached no further semifinals throughout the year. Her best result of the season at a tournament in the premier category she achieved in Indian Wells with the quarter-finals, but had no chance against Bianca Andreescu , at the Australian Open and in Paris she made it to the second round. After the French Open 2019, Muguruza only managed one more victory in Wuhan by the end of the season , so that she finished the year outside the top 30 for the first time since her rise in 2014.
Since 2020
At the start of the 2020 season, Muguruza made an impressive return by reaching the final of the Australian Open . On the way to the final, she beat three players from the top 10 - Kiki Bertens , Elina Switolina and Simona Halep - before losing to Sofia Kenin . In Dubai and Doha , she reached the quarter-finals before the corona-related end of the season and improved back to the top 20 in the world rankings.
In 2015, Muguruza made her debut for the Spanish Fed Cup team in the 3-2 quarter-final defeat against Romania . Since then, she has played 14 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win ten (individual balance 9: 3).
