Nao Hibino ( Japanese 日 比 野 菜 緒 , Hibino Nao ; born November 28, 1994 in Aichi Prefecture ) is a Japanese tennis player .

Career

Hibino started playing tennis at the age of ten, her preferred surface is the hard court. As a junior, she reached the second round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2011 . In 2012 she made her debut on the ITF Women's Circuit and won her first three titles. The following year she won a tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Tsukuba for the first time.

In 2014, Hibino started at the US Open for the first time in qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament and lost in the second round. Her international breakthrough came in the following season, when she first won three ITF titles in the $ 50,000 category and then immediately landed her first win against her compatriot Hiroko Kuwata in Tokyo during her first main field participation at a tournament on the WTA Tour . In Tashkent she then won her first WTA title after a final victory over Donna Vekić, completely surprisingly and without losing a set . This was followed by another semi-final at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Hua Hin as well as the final participation in the ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Tokyo , so that she finished the 2015 season confidently in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time .

In 2016, Hibino mainly played smaller tournaments on the WTA Tour and reached the round of eight several times. In addition, she was in the main field in all four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time, but she was eliminated in the first round. At the beginning of the year she achieved her best world ranking so far with position 56. In Tashkent she reached the final again, but this time Kristýna Plíšková had to admit defeat in three sets. In her first participation in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she defeated Irina-Camelia Begu at the start , before losing to Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round . Although her performance stagnated the following year, she reached two more WTA finals in 2017: In Kuala Lumpur , which she lost to Ashleigh Barty , and in Nanchang , where she had to admit defeat to Peng Shuai . In doubles, she celebrated her first WTA title in Monterrey together with Alicia Rosolska. Due to another finals at the ITF tournament in Liuzhou , she was able to finish in the top 100 in the world for the third time in a row. In addition, she succeeded in New York against Catherine Bellis, her first success in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament; in the second round she failed in three sets to Lucie Šafářová .

After a weaker year in 2018, she won her second WTA individual title in Hiroshima in front of her home crowd in 2019 after beating her compatriot Misaki Doi in the final . She won the subsequent double final on the side of Misaki Doi. In 2020 she was able to survive the first round as a qualifier in Melbourne for the first time, in which she beat Peng Shuai in three sets before she was eliminated by Maria Sakkari . In the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Hua Hin she was able to beat Elina Switolina for the first time, a player from the top 10; in the semifinals she was defeated by Leonie Küng .

In 2016 she made her debut for the Japanese Fed Cup team . Since then she has played eleven individual games for her country, six of which she has won.
