Misaki Doi ( Japanese 土 居 美 咲 , Doi Misaki ; born April 29, 1991 in Ōamishirasato ) is a Japanese tennis player .

Career

Misaki Doi started tennis at the age of six and enjoyed success as a junior, especially in doubles. In 2007 she and her compatriot Kurumi Nara reached the final of the junior competition at Wimbledon , and the following year at the Australian Open alongside Elena Bogdan . She gained her first experience in 2006 on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , where she won her first professional title in 2009. Due to consistently good results at ITF tournaments in Japan, Doi quickly climbed the world rankings and ended the season in the top 200.

This entitles her to qualify for all four Grand.Slam tournaments the following year, with her first jumping into the main field in Paris ; in the first round she had no chance against Polona Hercog . In the fall, she received her first wildcard for the qualifying round for the WTA Premier tournament in Tokyo and then celebrated her biggest title to date at the ITF tournament in the $ 75,000 category in Toyota after beating Junri Namigata in the final . In 2011 she surprised as a qualifier by reaching the third round at Wimbledon , in which she failed because of Sabine Lisicki . The following year Doi was in Osaka for the first time in the semi-finals of a WTA tournament, but lost there to Heather Watson . After participating in another semi-final at the WTA Challenger in Taipei , she was listed in the top 100 in the world for the first time.

In 2013 Doi achieved his first main field success in Tokyo in the opening match against Varvara Lepchenko . Before that, she made it into the second round from qualifying in Beijing , where she was defeated by Sara Errani . Following a weaker season in 2014, in which she made four Grand Slam appearances only in London after a success over Elina Switolina , with whom she previously won her first WTA double title in Istanbul succeeded, she presented herself in excellent shape at the end of the 2015 season when, after five defeats in a row in Luxembourg after victories over Andrea Petković and Jelena Janković , she won her first and so far in her first final participation on the WTA Tour in the final against Mona Barthel single title. The triumph heralded the strongest phase in Doi's career, which reached another final at the WTA Challenger in Taipei at the end of the season.

The following year she was able to record successes on all continents and playing surfaces for the first time. At the beginning of the 2016 season in Kaohsiung she achieved her second WTA final, which she lost this time to Venus Williams , and won her first individual title at the WTA Challenger Series in San Antonio after a success over Anna-Lena Friedsam in the final. At the premier tournament in Rome she surprised for the first time on the clay court and moved into the quarter-finals after defeating Johanna Konta , where she had to admit defeat to Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets. In Wimbledon Doi then reached her first Grand Slam round of 16 after a triumph over Karolína Plíšková , in which she lost to Angelique Kerber without a chance. She also competed at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she went into the second round in singles , where she was eliminated by Samantha Stosur . In doubles, she competed with Eri Hozumi and surprisingly prevailed in the opening round against the two-placed French Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia , before failing in their second match to Darja Kassatkina and Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia . In autumn, despite an opening defeat at the US Open , she reached her best career position in 30th place and ended the season in the top 40 in the world for the first time in her career.

Since then, Doi has not been able to perform consistently well over the course of an entire season. In the following year, she could not even begin to defend her points, even lost in the first round of all four Grand Slam tournaments and fell out of the top 100 in the world rankings at the end of the year. Despite winning the ITF $ 100,000 tournament in Vancouver , she missed an immediate return to the top 100 in the world in 2018. It wasn't until 2019 that she was able to convince again on the WTA Tour with major field successes in Indian Wells and Miami . Due to good results such as the triumph at the WTA Challenger in Båstad , where she landed a two-set victory over Danka Kovinić in the final , as well as her third WTA final participation in the tournament in Hiroshima , where she lost to her compatriot Nao Hibino , with whom she then won the doubles competition won, she finished the 2019 season for the fifth year in the top 100 in the world.

Before the corona-related end of the season in March, she was in a final at the WTA Challenger in Indian Wells , but failed there in two sets against Irina-Camelia Begu. At the Australian Open , she made it into the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in doubles alongside Monica Niculescu . In the individual, however, she suffered her twelfth Grand Slam defeat in a row against qualifier Harriet Dart .

In 2011 Doi was nominated for the first time for the Japanese Fed Cup team . Since then she has played a total of 22 singles and doubles for her country, of which she won eleven (individual balance 10: 9).
