Varvara Lepchenko ( Russian Варвара Петровна Лепченко ; born May 21, 1986 in Tashkent , then Soviet Union ) is an American tennis player . She has lived in the US since 2000 and has been a US citizen since September 24, 2011 . She played for Uzbekistan until September 2007 .

Career

Lepchenko, who started tennis at the age of seven, has won eleven singles and one double title at ITF tournaments so far .

On the WTA Tour she celebrated her first success in 2009 when she reached the last sixteen of the Family Circle Cup (Category: Premier) in Charleston , in which she lost to Jelena Dementjewa in two straight sets. 2010 she was eliminated in the quarterfinals of Ponte Vedra Beach (Category: International) against Wolha Hawarzowa . She achieved her best results in Grand Slam tournaments when she reached the second round in 2006 at the US Open (two-set defeat against Marion Bartoli ) and in 2010 at the French Open (after 6-0 in the third set against Dominika Cibulková ) and at Wimbledon (3-6 in the third set against the Ukrainian Aljona Bondarenko ). In 2011 she was able to confirm her performance in Paris.

In 2012 she caused a stir when she reached the last sixteen at the French Open with a narrow three-set win over former title winner Francesca Schiavone . There came the end against the number 4 seed Petra Kvitová (2: 6, 1: 6). Nevertheless, Lepchenko climbed to number 51 in the world rankings . In Wimbledon, she also reached the third round in 2012, in which she again lost out against defending champion Kvitová with 1: 6 and 0: 6. This was followed by a quarter-finals in Carlsbad (three-set defeat against Nadja Petrowa ) and a round of 16 participation in Montreal (three-set defeat against Caroline Wozniacki ). At the US Open, where she was in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the third time in a year, she had to admit defeat to defending champion Samantha Stosur . Her good results brought her to 19th place in the WTA ranking, her previous record.

The year 2013 turned into a “double year” together with Zheng Saisai . At the Australian Open , they reached the semi-finals, in which they had to let the local heroes Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty go first in two sets. At the French Open they were stopped in the quarterfinals by the eventual finalists Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci . In June Lepchenko consequently reached 40th place in the double world rankings. In Wimbledon and at the US Open, the two were eliminated against strong opponents in the second round.

In 2013 Lepchenko first played for the US Fed Cup team ; their Fed Cup record shows so far 2 wins in 1 defeat.
