Hampton began playing tennis at the age of eight. In 2009 she became a professional player, and in 2010 she competed in singles for the first time at the US Open . At the ITF Women's Circuit , she won five singles and five titles each.
For the first time she reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament in 2012 at the Australian Open , where she was then defeated by Maria Sharapova . By reaching the second round in Memphis , she made it into the top 100 of the world rankings on March 19 . She also reached round two at Wimbledon, and by the end of the year she improved to position 71. In doubles, she last competed in May 2012.
In 2013 she continued to improve her record at Grand Slam tournaments. In Melbourne she reached round three, in which she had to admit defeat to world number one and eventual winner Wiktoryja Asaranka only after three sets. At the French Open , she moved into the round of 16 for the first time, in which she was clearly defeated by Jelena Janković . She was also in the final of the WTA tournament in Brussels , which she lost to Kaia Kanepi 6: 7, 4: 6. Also at the grass tournament in Eastbourne she was in the final on June 22, 2013, in which she was defeated by Jelena Wesnina 2: 6 and 1: 6. She climbed to 25th place in the world rankings, and in July she reached her highest point of 24th.
In January 2014, she completed her last match on the women's tour. She underwent a total of six operations in the following 18 months, but never returned to the tour.
On May 19, 2020, she announced her final retirement.
Personal
Jamie Hampton, whose mother is from South Korea, was born in West Germany, where her father was stationed as a career officer in the US Army . The family moved to the United States during their childhood. At first, Jamie lived in Enterprise, Alabama ; when she was 13 years old she came to Auburn . By the time she graduated from Auburn High School in 2008 , she had won double USTA Girls' 18s titles.
