Pelham is an American city in Alabama in Shelby County . In the year 2000 the place had 14,369, the updates of the US Census Office showed 20,120 inhabitants for the year 2006. The city is named after John Pelham , an officer in the Civil War .

history
The city became their county seat three months after Shelby County's founding. It was then called Shelbyville. The first courthouse was built in 1820 by Thomas A. Rogers. The construction costs at that time were 53 US dollars . From the beginning, the building was only intended for temporary use, and as early as 1826 the headquarters of the counties were relocated to Columbiana .
After the end of the Civil War, the town was renamed in honor of the Confederate war hero Major John Pelham. This had a significant influence on the Battle of Fredericksburg and was killed in action at Kelly's Ford in 1863.
At the beginning of the 1960s, the neighboring town of Alabaster Pelham wanted to incorporate. This met with resistance, and the citizens of Pelham now pursued the establishment of a city . 1964 Pelham received the founding act. At the time of the city elevation on July 10, 1964, Pelham had 654 inhabitants. The town hall was initially located in the old school that the WPA had built. The building had to give way to a new building at this point in 1975.
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Pelham inhabited 14,369 people. The population density was 378.2 people per km ². There were 5894 housing units at an average of 59.9 per km ². Pelham's population was 90.02% white , 3.97% black or African American , 0.35% Native American , 1.68% Asian , 2.82% said they were racial , and 1.16% said they were racially different two or more races. 6.42% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Pelham were distributed to 5637 households out of which 35.5% were living in children under the age of 18. 59.3% of households were married, 8.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 29.0% were not families. 25.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 5.8% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05.
The urban population was divided into 25.6% minors, 7.4% 18–24 year olds, 35.7% 25–44 year olds, 22.7% 45–64 year olds and 8.6% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 women there were 94.8 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 91.6 men.
The median household income in Pelham was 54,808 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 63,994 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 42,659 compared with $ 32,382 for women. The per capita income in Pelham was $ 25,611. 4.6% of the population and 3.4% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 5.7% of minors and 2.4% of those aged 65 and over.
