Romina Sarina Oprandi (born March 29, 1986 in Jegenstorf ) is a Swiss - Italian tennis player . She lives in Bern .
Career
Her talent for tennis was recognized early on. Her father had a tennis hall built for her in Bern, which is still standing today. But the daughter had major problems with her right arm, so that she had to interrupt her career for medical reasons. After her recovery, she wanted to achieve success on the WTA Tour .
Since Oprandi did not feel that she was being adequately supported and her family had fallen out with representatives of the Swiss Tennis Association, she switched to the Italian Tennis Association at the age of 17, which was possible due to her dual citizenship. Until the Australian Open in 2012, she started as an Italian. In February 2012 she finally returned to the Swiss Association, at the WTA tournament in Bogota in the same month she competed as a Swiss for the first time.
In the Fed Cup 2006 Oprandi was in the squad of the eventual winner Italy, but was not used. Also in the semifinals against Spain, she was scheduled for the double with Mara Santangelo , which was no longer played. In 2013 she was appointed to the Swiss Fed Cup team , for which she has since achieved three wins in four individual games.
In May 2006, Oprandi started with a wild card at the WTA tournament in Rome , where she fought her way to the quarterfinals, in which she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 7-5 and 6-7 5 . Through this success she reached the top 100 of the WTA world rankings . In 2006 she took part in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in Wimbledon . After she had survived the qualification, her first opponent in the main field was again Kuznetsova, against whom she again drew the short straw this time (3: 6, 2: 6).
After her departure from Wimbledon in 2013 (abandonment in the third set), Oprandi did not play a tournament until February 2014. In Midland, she made an amazing comeback at the ITF tournament there; As number 114 in the world rankings, she defeated the top 40 player Bojana Jovanovski . She reached the quarter-finals and the final at the WTA tournament in Marrakech in Bogotá . After a semi-final victory over the top seeded Daniela Hantuchová, she lost to María Teresa Torró Flor in three sets. With Garbiñe Muguruza as a partner, she won the doubles competition there and thus her first WTA title.
