About this picture

Wahlstedt ( Low German : Wohlsteed ) is a town in the Segeberg district , Schleswig-Holstein .

geography

The city is located around seven kilometers west of Bad Segeberg on the northeastern edge of the Segeberger Forest .

history

Wahlstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1150. The then Bishop of Oldenburg , Vicelin , confirms the Segeberg Church the "distribution of tithes" by Emperor Lothars III. and Duke Henry for the canons of the Augustinians in Högersdorf . Ten villages are named in this document, including a village called "Wahlstedte". Whether Wahlstedt was already in the possession of the Augustinian monastery in Högersdorf at this point is still controversial today, because Wahlstedt was officially donated by Emperor Heinrich VI in 1192 . to the canons of the Augustinians in Högersdorf as property. However, prehistoric and early historical finds in today's municipal area testify to a much earlier settlement.

During the Thirty Years War the village of Wahlstedt was destroyed by arson and then rebuilt.

During the Napoleonic wars in the 19th century, Wahlstedt had to endure changing billeting of Danish, German, Swedish and Russian troops.

After the Second World War , the municipality of Wahlstedt belonged to the office of Segeberg-Land until March 1953. On July 1, 1954, the municipality of Wahlstedt was spun off as an office-free municipality from the office of Segeberg-Land. On December 13, 1966, the municipality of Wahlstedt was granted city rights by the Schleswig-Holstein state government , which came into force on January 1, 1967.

coat of arms

The coat of arms and flag were approved on May 19, 1956.

Blazon : "Divided by silver and red obliquely to the left, on top of it, in exchanged colors, a rooted oak stump with four branches placed obliquely to the right."

The division of the shield in the coat of arms refers to the coexistence of the villages Klein- and Großwahlstedt in the Middle Ages . Already mentioned in a document in the middle of the 12th century, Kleinwahlstedt was closed down around 1444. The area of both villages continued as Wahlstedt. The oak trunk as the only heraldic figure indicates the origins of the place as a clearing settlement in the relatively early period of the -stedt places (around 400 AD) and with its twelve roots reflects the number of original hooves . The four branches are intended to refer to four times of emergency in the place caused by wars (Wendezkampf, Thirty Years War, Napoleonic War, Second World War) and to the four sources of income of the inhabitants in the past (agriculture, cattle breeding, hunting, fishing). The colors of the coat of arms, which are appropriately tinged in confused colors, are the colors of the Holstein region.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

The flag of Wahlstedt is split into the leech (the smaller part next to the pole) and the flying end (the larger part adjoining the leech). The leech is again divided into two squares, of which the upper one in the white and red diagonally right-hand divided field shows the oak stump in a mistaken color as in the coat of arms, the lower one an empty white field. The flying end is divided into two rectangles by red and white.

The marine artillery arsenal Fahrenkrug-Wahlstedt

In 1935 the naval command in Berlin decided to enlarge the naval artillery witness office in Kiel . For this purpose, a new arsenal was created on the north side of the Segeberger Forest on the south-western edge of the village of Wahlstedt . From 1937 onwards, the Segeberg Marine Artillery Ancillary Equipment Office was established here, which was renamed the Fahrenkrug Marine Artillery Arsenal after construction was completed. The name Fahrenkrug was chosen because of the train station from which the siding to the arsenal was laid.

The newly established naval artillery arsenal covered a contiguous area of 314 hectares. The area was surrounded by a 10 km long and 2 m high chain link fence. In order to avoid endangering the surrounding houses, some land and houses had to be bought. The buildings on it were torn down or converted into company apartments . Since the houses were insufficient to accommodate the staff, a further 84 hectares were purchased in Wahlstedt, on which a total of three settlements for the Arsenals staff were to be built.

The tasks of the Marine-Artillery-Arsenal Fahrenkrug-Wahlstedt were:

  • 1. Manufacture of coastal and marine artillery ammunition from supplied individual parts,
  • 2. Examination of ammunition,
  • 3. Supply of ammunition to the Navy,
  • 4. Restoration of empty tubes in three tube workshops and an associated electroplating facility,
  • 5. Repair and conversion of coastal artillery guns,
  • 6. Storage of the manufactured marine artillery ammunition.

Production began in 1939 with a workforce of 30 employees, 300 male and 200 female workers, which one year later had doubled to 1,000. A list of the workforce in May 1945 gives the following picture:

  • 488 Germans
  • 207 Poles, Latvians and Lithuanians
  • 247 Italians
  • 74 French
  • 90 Dutch people
  • 33 Soviet prisoners of war

together: 1139 people.

In addition to this workforce, there were 680 soldiers and 172 civilian employees. The naval artillery arsenal Fahrenkrug-Wahlstedt thus had a total workforce of 1991 men in May 1945.

On May 3, 1945, British soldiers occupied the Fahrenkrug-Wahlstedt naval artillery arsenal. The last arsenal commander was appointed arsenal director after a short imprisonment and had to carry out the liquidation work under British orders. In the spring of 1946, blasting began on the bunkers. The last explosions in the area of the Fahrenkrug-Wahlstedt naval artillery arsenal were not completed until 1953. Most of the brick buildings, the supply systems and the standard-gauge track system were not destroyed. The remaining stocks of ammunition and powder, approx. 50,000 t, were destroyed by 1953, all furnishings from the production, administration and farm buildings were dismantled and the trees around the individual buildings were cut down and shipped to England.

Various industrial companies moved into the vacated halls from 1947 onwards. The settlement was incorporated into Wahlstedt in 1952. As a result, many expellees became Neu-Wahlstedter. The associated increase in the number of inhabitants led to the city census in 1967.
