About this picture

Groß Niendorf is a municipality in the Segeberg district in Schleswig-Holstein . The community of Groß Niendorf has no other districts.

Geography and traffic

Groß Niendorf is located near the town of Bad Segeberg in an extensive moor landscape . The village on the federal highway 432 is surrounded by a moor landscape in which the black grouse was to be found for a long time . The Groß Niendorfer Au divides the place into two districts. Where the ponds for surface drainage "Auendiek" are now, there used to be a ford through the water instead of a bridge . All these features can be found in the coat of arms of the municipality.

history

The community of Groß Niendorf (formerly also Nindbod or Nyendorpe) was first mentioned in a document in 1249. It was predominantly characterized by agricultural businesses with the associated typical half-timbered houses and cottages that were used as combined residential and farm buildings . Some of them have not been rebuilt in the old style after numerous fires, others have been demolished due to disrepair . The painter Christian Rohlfs (1849–1938) was born in one of these cottages belonging to Hof Stolten .
