history
Archaeological finds prove a prehistoric settlement of the municipality.
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1249. There was a school in Westerrade as early as 1754, which lasted until 1964.
From 1916 to 1964, Westerrade was a railway station in the passenger and freight traffic of the Lübeck-Segeberger Railway . After the cessation of passenger traffic in 1964, the section Westerrade - Arfrade was discontinued at the end of 1966 and the rest of the operation to Bad Segeberg was discontinued in late 1967.
For several years now, Westerrade has had a small local history museum on the Pritschau farm. The exhibition focuses on agricultural machinery. Visits are possible by appointment.
politics
Community representation
Of the nine seats in the municipal council, the AKPV electoral community has had five seats since the local elections in 2003 and the CDU four.
coat of arms
Blazon : “In green a lowered golden wave bar, above it a soaring, golden armored silver heron with a golden fish in its beak; including a rooted, knocking silver tree stump. "
Historical reason: Large parts of the wider area around Westerrades have been preserved in their original state to this day. With their rivers and lakeshores, they form a favorable breeding area for the gray heron, which is endangered in its population. The wave bar indicates the course of the Struckau, which divides the community into two districts that were previously differentiated as Wester and Osterrade. The name of the place, "western clearing", indicates the origin of the place in the middle of a forest area. The tree stump in the coat of arms therefore refers on the one hand to the establishment phase of the place, but on the other hand is also a pictorial representation of the place name. The transformation of a living space into a new one is expressed by knocking out the stump. The colors green and gold once again emphasize the beneficial charm of the natural landscape in the wider area surrounding the town.
flag
Blazon : “In the leech the municipal coat of arms without a shield. The flying end is divided into eleven alternating yellow and green horizontal stripes. "
economy
The municipal area is predominantly agricultural, but there are also extensive housing developments. There are some commercial and service businesses in the community.
