Location of the municipality of Fahrenkrug in the Segeberg district | ||
Fahrenkrug is a municipality in the Segeberg district in Schleswig-Holstein . The districts of Rotenhahn and Fahrenkruger Ziegelei belong to Fahrenkrug.
history
Varencroch was first mentioned in 1192 as a village belonging to the Segeberg monastery . The Old High German name Varencroch means fern angle , so that the fern and an angle are depicted in the municipal coat of arms.
People already settled here in prehistoric times. In addition to stone axes and tools from the Stone Age , valuable finds were recovered from Bronze Age barrows , including a solid golden oath ring weighing 318 grams. The Fahrenkrug signet ring can be viewed in Gottorf Castle . In the village's own museum in the primary school building, many of these finds can be admired once a month or by arrangement. A historic shop and a children's room are also on display.
The rural economy shaped the image of the place. But the convenient location directly between Bad Segeberg and Wahlstedt made Fahrenkrug the preferred location for small-scale rural industries. In 1888 the country's first bread factory was built in Fahrenkrug, which was preceded by a mill in 1885 . Sawmills , brickworks and a dairy followed the bread factory into the village. Most of these businesses no longer exist today. The bread factory existed until 1971 and was converted into a residential and office building in the 1990s.
In 1889 a volunteer fire brigade was founded. A youth fire brigade has been affiliated with the fire brigade since 1973, and young people from the neighboring village of Schackendorf also join.
Although a village of this size does not have to have its own school, the Fahrenkrug elementary school has existed continuously for over 200 years. There is only one class per year, usually with around 20 students each. The school always scores very well in the nationwide tests. The youngest citizens of the village are looked after in the thatched kindergarten.
Fahrenkrug became the district winner in 1992 and took third place in the competition Our village should be more beautiful .

Economy and Infrastructure
Established businesses
Fahrenkrug now has a notable local economy. A large carpentry shop , an upholstery shop , a well construction , an agricultural and garden technology company and a large forwarding company offer jobs for the Fahrenkrugers.
Transport links
The Neumünster - Bad Segeberg - Bad Oldesloe railway has been reopened since 2003 and runs directly through Fahrenkrug, which is the only municipality on the line to have its own station building. The railroad has always caused a stir in Fahrenkrug. When the German Kaiser traveled to Kiel Week , the Fahrenkruger dignitaries had to stand in line on the platform, as the old Berlin - Hagenow - Kiel rail link ran right through the town.
