Denain ( Dutch Dening ) is a commune with 19,825 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It is the capital of the canton of Denain in the arrondissement of Valenciennes .
Geography and traffic
The city is located near the Belgian border, ten kilometers southwest of Valenciennes . In Denain the Selle flows into the Scheldt . The Escaut , as the Scheldt is called in France, forms an important waterway between France, Belgium and the Netherlands and is canalised in Denain, as elsewhere, over long stretches . Renaturation projects are currently on the political agenda. Denain can be reached via the A2 autoroute . The A2 is a section of the E19 European route that runs from Amsterdam to Paris .
Denain belongs to the agglomeration of Valenciennes and is served by the tram system of this district city with five stops. The French state railways SNCF connect Denain with the two railway lines Lourches –Valenciennes and Denain – Saint-Amand-les-Eaux .
history
In 764 Count Adalbert von Ostervant and his wife Regina founded the Benedictine monastery of Denain.
In the 12th century Hugo II of Ostervant (French Hugues d'Ostrevant ) was the second son of Anselm II of Ostervant. The title Hugo von Valenciennes, which he probably carried in the role of the heir's son, has also survived. After an inheritance in the county of Hainaut , in which his nephew Gottfried ( Godefroid ) von Ostrevant and his half-brother Balduin IV ( Baudouin IV de Hainaut ) were involved, Hugo II had to take the name "Hugo von Denain" to make the title his actual fiefdom . Hugo had two sons: Jean I, died 1202, buried in the church l'Église des Dames Chanoinesses by Denain and Étienne I.
In Denain, the French defeated the Netherlands, allied with Habsburg Austria , in the Battle of Denain on July 24, 1712 during the War of the Spanish Succession . The war-weary Dutch, once under Spanish rule themselves , then left the scramble for the orphaned Spanish crown.

economy
Up until the 1950s, the area around Denain was a typical coal mining area . This attracted the steel industry, which relies on huge amounts of coal, which is used as a reducing agent , to refine iron ore . With the decline of the French steel industry in the course of globalization , the region began to suffer from very considerable economic structural problems. Since the announcement of the elimination of 6,000 jobs at the Usinor- Denain iron and steel works on December 2, 1978 , unemployment has remained endemic in the city. Only 27% of households now have a taxable income (almost 50% in France) and the unemployment rate is around 31%. In 2010, the online business portal Le Journal du Net examined the economic strength of all French cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants. Denain was classified as the poorest municipality in France.
