history

Famars was already settled in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD). During the reign of Tiberius (14–37) thermal baths and other public buildings were built. The village was connected by a Roman road with the Via Belgica from Bavay (Bavacum) to Tournai (Turnacum) . Towards the end of the first century, the settlement around the site of today's church had a radius of about 900 meters. The 2nd to 5th centuries were marked by constant armed conflicts between Romans and Nervians . At that time a fort was built, the walls of which were flanked by about ten towers. In addition, the population turned to the worship of the god of war Mars . Fanum Martis ('Temple of Mars') was the first traditional place name of the settlement. After the destruction of Bavay by the Vandals in 407, Famars became the capital of the Nervians, but lost its importance in the Carolingian period (751–987).

Famars Castle burned down in 1340 and 1662 and was then rebuilt. In the middle of the 18th century, the then Seigneur von Famars, Alexandre le Hardy, discovered a hall from the Gallo-Roman period in the basement of the castle.
