Avesnes-le-Sec is a French commune with 1,458 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Denain (until 2015: canton of Bouchain ). The inhabitants are called Avesnois (es) .
geography
Avesnes-le-Sec is about 15 kilometers southwest of Valenciennes . Avesnes-le-Sec is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Noyelles-sur-Selle in the north, Haspres in the east, Villers-en-Cauchies in the south and south-east, Iwuy in the south and west, Hordain in the west and Lieu-Saint-Amand in the north-west.
history
The battle at Avesnes-le-Sec took place on September 12, 1793 in the first coalition war between Habsburg and French (republican) troops. The Austrian troops prevailed.
