Iwuy is a French municipality with 3348 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cambrai and the municipality of Agglomération de Cambrai .
geography
The municipality of Iwuy is located in the far north of France at the mouth of the Erclin in the canalized Scheldt , between the cities of Cambrai and Valenciennes . The ground relief of the community is mostly flat, flat hills rise in the southeast, the highest point in the community area is here at 81 m above sea level. Like the surrounding area, the area of the municipality is almost woodless. Smaller alluvial forests ( Les Petits Bois ) have only survived near the Scheldt . Outside the closed settlement image of the core town there are wide fields and pastures.
Neighboring municipalities of Iwuy are Hordain in the north, Avesnes-le-Sec in the northeast, Villers-en-Cauchies in the east, Rieux-en-Cambrésis in the southeast, Naves in the south, Thun-Saint-Martin in the southwest, Thun-l'Évêque in the West as well as Estrun in the northwest.
history
Finds of hewn stones and remains of tombs suggest that the area around Iwuy was already settled in prehistoric times.
At the turn of the ages the area around Iwuy was inhabited by the Nervier tribe. They built their stilt houses on the right, eastern bank of the Scheldt. A bridge over the Scheldt connected the right bank with the oppidum of Estrun . Remnants of the piles were recovered when a mansion was being built.
After the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar in the 4th century, nearby Cambrai became an important city for the Romans. Urns, jewelery and coins with images of the Roman emperors that were found here bear witness to this.
After the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the Scheldt near Iwuy formed the border between the kingdoms of Charles the Bald and Louis the Pious for 800 years; Iwuy was now part of the Cambrésis district of Erclindie in the county of Hainaut within the Holy Roman Empire .
The first known noble family ruling Iwuy were the Écaillon , whose serrated cross in the coat of arms formed the template for the municipal coat of arms of Iwuy.
At the beginning of the Hundred Years War Iwuy suffered severe devastation from British, Flemish and French troops.

From a connection to the A2, the highway to Cambrair runs through Iwuy. There are other road connections to the neighboring communities of Avesnes-le-Src and Rieux-en-Cambrésis.
