The name became common around 1350 after Calderiacum, Caudris and Cauder were mentioned in a document.

geography

The municipality is located in the former county of Hainaut ( comté de Hainaut ), a slightly hilly, approx. 80 to 120 m above sea level. The center of the community area lies within the urban area.

The municipality crosses both national road 43 ( Metz - Calais ) and the Cambrai - Busigny - Saint-Quentin railway in a west-north-west-east-south-east direction. The national road cuts off around ten percent of the municipal area in the north, and the railroad ten percent in the south. Both traverses only touch the built-up area of the city slightly.

coat of arms

The coat of arms is formed by three upright red leaves on a silver background. The coat of arms is framed by two oak branches tied at the bottom with a ribbon, crowned by a red crown with four stylized towers.

history

Early history to modern times

The origins of the settlement are quite imprecise. The local museum dates the first finds to the first century AD.

In 1804 Caudry had just under 2,000 inhabitants. A hundred years later it had become an industrial city with 13,000 inhabitants, the number of which is still there today. The period of the 19th century in particular is therefore worth a closer look.

Away from all important traffic connections, the tulle, lace and embroidery industry was born in Caudry. This area (Cambrésis ) has been famous for its batiste (very fine linen) since the end of the Middle Ages . In 1789 the weavers worked on 13,000 wooden looms. These stood in various villages around Caudry.

industrialization

After 1790, however, a change was necessary because of the now emerging cotton. The first tulle looms came from Great Britain. They were introduced very quickly in Valenciennes , Calais , St. Quentin and finally in “Cambrésis”. In Caudry, the first Placide Gabet machines were built in the "Château de Caudry" (no longer preserved).

In 1827 there were 25 tulle weavers and 220 looms for cotton tulle only. From 1850 these looms were operated with steam. Because of the free trade agreement with Great Britain, from Napoleon III. Signed in 1860, Caudry got into a very serious economic crisis because of its older machines compared to Nottingham and Calais .

Pointed edge of the early period

During the campaign of Prussia against France the city on January 21, 1871, a week before the signing of was armistice of Versailles , occupied.

At the end of the 19th century, lace adorned women's clothing from all social classes. The economy in Caudry picked up again, with new looms being delivered to Caudry every day. Caudry lace was exported everywhere and buyers from all over the world visited the town.

The First World War caused severe damage to the city. Hundreds of houses were destroyed. After the war, reparations payments made it possible to acquire new machines that could produce large widths for model tailoring. The first nylon was processed during the Second World War .

Industrial conversion

Today there are still twelve companies that fall into the field of the textile industry (status: 2000). Eight companies were still producing lace in 2014; they have specialized in the production of particularly high quality goods, around 80% of which are exported. For example, Kate Middleton's wedding dress is from Caudry, as is the dress Michelle Obama wore when her husband was inaugurated, and local businesses regularly work for well-known fashion designers .

In the south of the city is 100 since the 1970 ha large industrial zone created where some 1,700 people are employed. The main sectors are the food ( Nestlé ), cosmetic ( L'Oréal ) and paper goods industries .

administration

At the head of the administration stood since 1995 as mayor Guy Bricout , who in the 2017 National Assembly was elected. In July 2017, the municipal council elected his son Frédéric Bricout as his successor; his term of office expires in 2020. He is assisted by nine councilors to the side. The local council has 17 members, 13 of whom have come from the mayor's list ( “Ensemble pour Caudry” , politically classified as other rights ) since the local elections in March 2014 ; in addition, two representatives from the Front National and one member each from the Socialists and one from the Left Front were elected.
