Proville is a commune with 3163 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Cambrai and the Canton of Cambrai . The inhabitants are called Provillois .
geography
Proville is a banlieue to the south and southwest of Cambrai on the Scheldt and the Canal de Saint-Quentin . The Bois Chenu Forest is a remarkable biodiversity reserve. Proville is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Cambrai in the north and east, Rumilly-en-Cambrésis in the south-east, Marcoing in the south, Noyelles-sur-Escaut in the south and south-west, Cantaing-sur-Escaut in the west and south-west and Fontaine-Notre-Dame in the West and northwest.
history
The name of the place is said to be derived from Puerorum villa , as it was named in the 11th and 12th centuries. A Roman road still ran through the area in the fifth century.
During the First World War , the site was almost completely destroyed in the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917.
