Dietmar Arnold (born December 19, 1964 in Berlin ) is a German author. He published popular scientific literature on the history of Berlin. His main focus is on the historical documentation of underground facilities.

Life

Dietmar Arnold attended the Gustav Dreyer School and then the Georg Herwegh High School . He then began studying urban and regional planning at the Technical University of Berlin . The thesis dealt with the Beelitz sanatoriums .

In 1991 Arnold began to research the underground facilities in Berlin and received orders from the Berlin Senate Building Department to draw up reports . Together with his fellow student Andreas Körner he founded the planning office Arnold & Körner GbR , which existed until 2005. They measured and documented structures. Initially, the company even applied for plans for the redesign of Potsdamer Platz . “We were highly traded and were the first to come up with a concrete urban design. We had a good chance of being involved in the planning assignment for the square, ”said Arnold. But when it turned out that the two young planners were still students, the dream of a major contract fell through.

On May 22, 1997, Dietmar Arnold and six other people founded the Berliner Unterwelten association , which he has led as first chairman ever since. The then co-owner of the planning office, Andreas Körner, is the director of finance for the Berlin Underworld Association. On November 13th, 2006 Dietmar and his brother Ingmar Arnold were awarded the Silver Hemisphere , the German Prize for Monument Protection 2006, on behalf of the entire Berliner Unterwelten eV in Weimar . This award is the highest award in this field in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Arnold received the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin in October 2018 for his work and his commitment to the historical legacy of Berlin .

Arnold has been a member of the SPD since 1989 . In 2014 he wanted to apply within the party to succeed Klaus Wowereit as Governing Mayor of Berlin , but did not find a sufficient number of supporters to be able to run.
