geography
Haspres is located on the Selle , a tributary of the Scheldt around 15 kilometers in the south-west of Valenciennes . Haspres is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Douchy-les-Mines in the north, Thiant and Monchaux-sur-Échaillon in the northeast, Verchain-Maugré in the east, Saulzoir in the southeast, Villers-en-Cauchies in the south, Avesnes-le-Sec in the southwest as well Noyelles-sur-Selle in the north-west.
history
On August 25, 1914, the first major clashes of the First World War took place here on French soil, while the French and British troops withdrew from Belgium (Mons) after the counter-offensive.
