Abscon is a French municipality with 4447 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France (formerly Nord-Pas-de-Calais ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Denain . The inhabitants are called Absconnais .

geography

Abscon is about halfway between Valenciennes and Douai , 17 kilometers away.

Abscon is surrounded by the neighboring communities Fenain and Erre in the north, Escaudain in the east and northeast, Rœulx in the southeast, Mastaing in the south, Émerchicourt in the southwest, Aniche in the west and Somain in the northwest.

Autoroute A2 leads through the municipality . Here at the motorway triangle, the A21 autoroute goes to Lens .

history

The name of the place has been confirmed as an abconium since 1103 . As early as the 11th century, there was a larger parish here, which is led by a church with the patronage of Saint-Brice .
