history
Finds from the Bronze Age indicate an early, prehistoric settlement. With the Gallic War , the Romans came to the area. Remains of a temple of Isis were found on the hills near Anzin, the destruction of which can be dated to the time of Emperor Valentinian I (around 369).
Today's Anzin is mentioned as Anzinium 877. With the conquest by the Normans, the Scheldt becomes the border river to the Holy Roman Empire .
At the Battle of Valenciennes in 1566/67 (start of the Eighty Years War ), the Spanish troops gathered on the hills of Anzin.
From the 18th century, coal mining became an important branch of industry.
With the industrial decline in the former coal region, the city has seen a decline since the 1960s.
