Neuville-sur-Escaut is a French commune with 2,702 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Denain . The inhabitants are called Neuvillois (es) .
geography
Neuville-sur-Escaut is located on the canalized Scheldt around 15 kilometers west-southwest of Valenciennes . Neuville-sur-Escaut is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Lourches in the north, Douchy-les-Mines in the east, Noyelles-sur-Escaut in the southeast, Lieu-Saint-Amand in the south and Bouchain in the west and southwest.
Autoroute A2 leads through the municipality .
history
In 864 the area was donated by Charles the Bald to the Abbey of Saint-Amand. In 1890 the mill on the Scheldt was converted into an early power station.
