Hergnies belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Marly (until 2015: canton of Condé-sur-l'Escaut ). The inhabitants are called Hergnisiens .

Hergnies is on the edge of the Regional Nature Park Scarpe-Schelde (French: Parc naturel régional Scarpe-Escaut ) on the canalized Scheldt and on the border with Belgium . Hergnies is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Péruwelz-Wiers (Belgium) in the north, Vieux-Condé in the east, Odomez in the south, Bruille-Saint-Amand in the west and south-west and Flines-lès-Mortagne in the north-west.
