Anna-Lena Friedsam (born February 1, 1994 in Neuwied ) is a German tennis player .

Career

Friedsam began playing tennis at the age of six. In 2009 she became German youth champion.

2012 season

She won six ITF tournaments that year . This improved it by around 450 places in the world rankings between January and August . In the second round of qualifying for the WTA tournament in Luxembourg , she defeated Andrea Hlaváčková for the first time, a top 100 player in 2012 .

2013 season

In August she won the ITF in Kazan and in September in Trabzon . At the French Open , in Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as in several WTA tournaments, she took part in the qualification, with a victory against Peng Shuai in Stuttgart , but not qualifying for a main draw.

2014 season

With a victory over Luksika Kumkhum Friedsam was able to qualify for the first time in Shenzhen for the main draw of a WTA tournament; with a victory over Bojana Jovanovski she moved there into the round of 16, in which she was defeated by Jana Čepelová . At the Australian Open , she failed in qualifying. At the indoor tournament in Paris , she qualified for a tournament in the premier category for the first time. In Rio de Janeiro , where she was qualified for the first time directly for the main draw of a WTA tournament, she reached the second round. Also in Wimbledon and in Roland Garros she was qualified for the first time for the main round because of her world ranking position; however, it never got beyond the first round. After leaving in the qualification of the US Open , she won early September 2014 her first WTA Challenger tournament in the individual; she defeated the Chinese Duan Yingying 6: 1, 6: 3 in the final in Suzhou .

Her greatest success so far was in the first round of the WTA tournament in Linz with a win (2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4) over the third-placed Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulková . After further victories over Jana Čepelová and Stefanie Vögele , Friedsam reached the semifinals of a WTA tournament for the first time, in which she lost to Karolína Plíšková .

2015 season

For the main field of the Australian Open she was directly qualified; In the first round, however, she met Eugenie Bouchard , who was placed 7th , to whom she lost 2: 6, 4: 6. At the French Open and Wimbledon , she reached the second round each. On July 20, she suffered a double ligament tear in the game against Klára Koukalová at the Nuremberg Gastein Ladies at a score of 6: 1 and 4: 0, which forced her to take a longer break. After her return she reached the final of the Generali Ladies Linz with victories over Magdaléna Rybáriková , Andreea Mitu , Margarita Gasparjan and Johanna Larsson . At the end of the year Friedsam became German tennis champion when she defeated Katharina Hobgarski 6-0 and 6-1 in the final of the national championships .

2016 season

At the beginning of the season she first reached the semifinals in Shenzhen , where she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska . At the following Australian Open , she made it into the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career . At the US Open , she played her last match for the time being, because her shoulder problems, which eventually had to be operated on, increased over the course of the season.

Since 2017

Because of her shoulder operation Friedsam was only able to start her comeback at the ITF tournament in Clermont-Ferrand at the end of 2017 and won the ITF tournament in Shrewsbury .

At the Australian Open 2018 she had Angelique Kerber as an opponent in the first round and lost. In the first week of April Friedsam had to have his shoulder operated on again and could not start training until the end of May.

2020 season

Friedsam made his debut for the German Fed Cup team on February 8, 2020 . A little later she achieved her greatest international success to date at the tournament in Lyon , where she reached the final of a WTA International Tournament for the second time after Linz 2015 , but lost it to Sofia Kenin 2: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6. During the tournament, the unset German defeated three seeded players, first number two on the seeding list, Kristina Mladenovic , and then Viktória Kužmová and Darja Kassatkina .
