Annika Beck (born February 16, 1994 in Giessen ) is a former German tennis player .

Career

Beck, who started playing tennis at the age of five, prefers the hard court . On January 31, 2010 she won her first ITF tournament in Kaarst when she defeated Audrey Bergot from France 6: 2 and 7: 5 in the final.

On April 10, 2012, she made her debut at the tournament in Copenhagen on the WTA Tour with a two-set defeat against Petra Martić (4-6, 4-6). In June she was the first German after Anna-Lena Grönefeld , the winner of 2003, to reach the finals of the Roland Garros junior women competition . There she defeated the Slovak Anna Karolína Schmiedlová 3: 6, 7: 5, 6: 3. In June 2012 Beck managed to move into the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon . She met Wolha Hawarzowa in the first round , to whom she lost 3: 6, 6: 3, 3: 6. With her six ITF titles in 2012, four of them from August to November, Beck achieved 78th place in the individual world rankings . In addition, she became German champion at the end of the year when she beat Antonia Lottner 6-1 and 6-0 in the final .

In 2013 she made her debut in the German Fed Cup team against France . She competed in doubles with Anna-Lena Grönefeld . They lost to the French pairing Alizé Cornet / Kristina Mladenovic 3: 6, 4: 6. In the same year she reached the semifinals of a WTA tournament in Katowice for the first time in her career . There she lost to Roberta Vinci 1: 6, 0: 6. In 2013, the quarter-finals at the Nuremberg Insurance Cup as well as at the WTA tournaments in Budapest and the following week in Bad Gastein were worth mentioning . Due to her improved world ranking, she took part in all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2013 and reached the second round three times.

The year 2014 began at the WTA tournament in Shenzhen , where she was eliminated in the semifinals against the later winner Li Na . In Hobart she failed in the first round, at the Australian Open she lost to Ana Ivanović in round two . As in the previous year, she reached the final at the WTA tournament in Luxembourg, where she defeated Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová 6: 2, 6: 1 and thus won her first title on the WTA Tour. In the Grand Slam tournaments, she only reached the second round at the Australian Open this year , otherwise she lost her opening encounters.

At the French Open in 2015 she was in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time; in the first round she managed a three-set victory over Agnieszka Radwańska , in the other she lost her first round games. In August in Florianópolis she won the doubles competition with Laura Siegemund and thus her first WTA title in doubles. In the individual final she was defeated there by Teliana Pereira 4: 6, 6: 4 and 1: 6. In September, she secured her second title on the tour at the WTA tournament in Québec with a final victory over Jeļena Ostapenko .

At the Australian Open in 2016, after winning over Priscilla Hon , Timea Bacsinszky and Laura Siegemund , she reached the round of 16 for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament, in which she lost to the eventual winner Angelique Kerber . In Roland Garros and Wimbledon she reached the third round each. She did not reach the final at a WTA tournament this year, in Nuremberg she reached the semi-finals.

Beck ended her career in October 2018 in favor of her medical degree .
