Margarita Melikowna Gasparjan ( Russian Маргари́та Ме́ликовна Гаспаря́н , born September 1, 1994 in Moscow ) is a Russian tennis player .

Career

Gasparjan started playing tennis at the age of five , she prefers grass and hard courts . At the ITF Women's Circuit , she has so far achieved nine successes in singles and eight in doubles.

She received a wildcard for the main field of the Kremlin Cup 2012 , but failed there in the first round in three sets to Lucie Šafářová . In the double competition there, she and her partner Alexandra Panowa were able to advance to the semi-finals in 2014 , where they were defeated by the eventual winners Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta .

At the French Open in 2015 she played her way into the main draw via qualification; she met Ana Konjuh in the first round , to whom she was defeated in two sets. At Wimbledon she was directly qualified, but had a difficult lot with Serena Williams ; she lost against the world number one with 4: 6 and 1: 6. In doubles , she reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time on the side of Alexandra Panowa .

By July 2015, Gasparjan had lost all three of her first round individual games on the WTA Tour . At the tournament in Baku on August 2, 2015, she won both the individual and, together with Alexandra Panowa, the double title. This was the first time she was in the top 100 of the WTA world rankings . In February and June 2016, she improved to 41st and 25th in the ranking, respectively. Due to a knee injury, she had to take a break for almost a year and a half, from June 2016 to October 2017.
