Anastassija Sergejewna Potapova ( Russian Анастасия Сергеевна Потапова , English transcription Anastasia Sergeyevna Potapova ; born March 30, 2001 in Saratow ) is a Russian tennis player .

Career

Potapova started playing tennis at the age of five and attracted attention at a young age. In 2015 she competed in the junior women's competition at Wimbledon and made it straight to the quarter-finals, as well as the 2016 Australian Open . At the French Open she advanced to the semi-finals and in Wimbledon she finally won her first Grand Slam title after a two-set success in the final over Dajana Jastremska . In the same year, she also won the prestigious Osaka Mayor's Cup after taking the lead in the junior world rankings in July . At the same time, she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour .

In 2017 she won her only title to date in a $ 25,000 tournament in Curitiba . She then made her debut at the Miami Open 2017 on the WTA tour after receiving a wildcard for qualification from the organizers , but lost there in the final round. As the reigning junior winner, she was also allowed to start in Wimbledon with a wildcard in the qualification. In her first Grand Slam appearance in the women's competition, she made it into the main field, but had to retire in the first round against Tatjana Maria due to an injury. In 2018 Potapowa reached two more finals on the ITF tour, in Chimki and Rome , which she lost significantly. After initial problems in the transition from the junior to the women's tour, she moved into the final in Moscow on her first appearance in a WTA main draw, in which she had to admit defeat to the lucky loser Olga Danilović in three close sets. With Vera Swonaryova together she won in the doubles competition and thus won her first WTA title. In the same year she reached the final again in Tashkant , but was beaten there by her compatriot Margarita Gasparjan . Nevertheless, she finished the 2018 season for the first time in the top 100 in the world and thus qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open . There, with a win over Pauline Parmentier in the opening round, she achieved her first success in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament among women. In the first round of the 2019 French Open , she defeated Angelique Kerber for the first time, a top 10 player, and won the doubles competition in Lausanne alongside Jana Sisikowa . Potapova achieved her best result of the season in singles at the Baltic Open in Jurmala, where she lost in the semifinals to the eventual winner Anastasija Sevastova .

After the 2019 season, in which she was unable to meet the high expectations placed on her, she was in better shape again with three quarter-finals in a row before the corona-related 2020 season end.

In 2018 Potapowa made her debut for the Russian Fed Cup team against Slovakia . Since then, she has contested four matches in singles and doubles and won two of them (individual balance 1: 1).
