Abigail Spears (born July 12, 1981 in Valley Center , San Diego County ) is an American tennis player . She achieved her greatest success so far in 2017 when she was victorious in mixed at the Australian Open .

Career

Spears started playing tennis when he was seven. In 1998 and 1999 she was number 1 in doubles in the United States, and in 1999 she was in the top ten of the singles ranking.

She has been a professional tennis player since October 2000. So far, she has won eight singles tournaments on the ITF Women's Circuit . In doubles, she has already achieved 21 successes in ITF tournaments and 21 on the WTA Tour .

In 2012 she and her doubles partner Raquel Kops-Jones reached the final of a WTA tournament six times (defeats in Brisbane, Doha), and they all won the tournaments in San Diego , Seoul , Tokyo and Osaka . In Sydney, Birmingham and Moscow they lost to the doubles specialists Květa Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik or Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond and Marija Kirilenko / Nadja Petrowa in the semi-finals .

With her outstanding performance in doubles, Spears reached 10th place in the WTA ranking in March 2015, her previous record.

At the Australian Open in 2014 she was together with Raquel Kops-Jones for the first time in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament ; they were defeated by Ekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina in three sentences.

At the 2019 US Open, Spears gave a positive doping test for prasterone , testosterone and metabolites , after which she was banned for 22 months.
