Raquel Atawo (* 8. December 1982 as Raquel Kops-Jones in Fresno ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Atawo, who prefers hard courts according to the WTA profile, began playing tennis at the age of eight. She has been on the professional tour since 2002, until her marriage in July 2015 she competed under the name Kops-Jones (see "Personal").

Atawo, who has only competed in doubles and mixed games since October 2011, has won 18 titles on the WTA Tour so far, 14 of them alongside Abigail Spears and ten on hard court. In March 2015 she achieved her personal best with 10th place in the double world rankings.

At the Australian Open in 2014, she and her permanent partner made it to the semi-finals, in which they were defeated by Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina in three sets. For Atawo it was the best result so far in a Grand Slam tournament . At Wimbledon, she was again in a semifinal round with Spears in 2016.

Personal

Raquel Atawo, the daughter of Nancy Kops and Lawrence Jones, has two sisters: Renee and Khristy. She has graduated from the University of Berkeley since 2004 . On July 18, 2015, she married Tobore (Toby) Atawo and took his last name. Most of the successes on the professional tour she earned under the name Kops-Jones.
