The Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions 2012 (also known as the International Tournament of Champions ) was a women's tennis invitation tournament that was held as an individual competition on hard courts from October 30 to November 4, 2012 in Sofia ( Bulgaria ). The tournament, which is part of the WTA Tour 2012 , was celebrating its fourth edition, until 2011 it was played in Bali ( Indonesia ). Defending champion was the Serbian Ana Ivanović , who has already won the tournament twice.

The prize money has increased from US $ 600,000 in 2012 to US $ 750,000.

The winner was the number two seeded Russian Nadja Petrowa , who won all of her games in the preliminary round, defeated the number four seeded Italian Roberta Vinci in the semifinals , before she then beat the top seeded Danish Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 in the final 6: 1 prevailed.

Qualification mode

Eight women were invited to the tournament who had to meet the following requirements:

  • For the six best-placed players in the world rankings (as of October 22, 2012) who won at least one of 29 tournaments in the International category (prize money: USD 220,000) of the WTA Tour in 2012 and who do not compete at the WTA Championships 2012 in Istanbul , the Participation is compulsory.
  • The tournament management of Sofia may award two wildcards to players who participated in at least one tournament of the WTA Tour in the International category in 2012 and are not playing in Istanbul until October 11, 2012 . If, contrary to expectations, one of the two players does not accept the wildcard, the right to start is transferred to the two next-best placed players in the world rankings. The organizer's two wildcards were awarded to Tsvetana Pironkowa and Marija Kirilenko .
  • If the two players, who were nominated as reservists in Istanbul, have qualified for Sofia, then they are free to play there, even if they have already played in Istanbul.

Competition mode

In the round-robin phase (Engl. Round Robin) play four players in two groups, each against all. The two best placed in each group qualify for the semi-finals, which will be played according to the knockout system . The winner of one group plays against the second in the other group, the winners of both games play the final.
