The Garanti Koza Tournament of Champions 2013 (also known as the International Tournament of Champions ) was a ladies' invitation tournament that was held as an individual competition from October 29 to November 3, 2013 in Sofia in the indoor hard court. The tennis tournament, which is part of the WTA Tour 2013 , was held for the fifth time and made a guest appearance in Sofia for the second time; until 2011 it was played in Bali in Indonesia . The defending champion was Nadja Petrowa . The main sponsor of the 2013 tournament was the international construction company Garanti Koza .

qualification

Qualification mode

Eight women were invited to the tournament who had to meet the following requirements:

  • For the six best-placed players in the world rankings (as of October 21, 2013) who won at least one of 30 tournaments in the International category (prize money: 235,000 US dollars) of the WTA Tour in 2013 and were not allowed to compete at the 2013 WTA Championships in Istanbul , participation was compulsory.
  • Up until October 10, 2013, the tournament management of Sofia was allowed to give two wild cards to players who had participated in at least one tournament of the WTA Tour in the International category in 2013 and were not supposed to play in Istanbul (if one of the two players had not accepted the wild card, that would be Starting right passed to the two runners-up in the world rankings). On September 19, 2013, the tournament management in Sofia announced that the two wildcards for the 2013 tournament had been awarded to Ana Ivanović - two-time winner, 2010 and 2011 - and to Tsvetana Pironkowa .
  • If both players who were nominated as reservists in Istanbul had also qualified for Sofia, they would be free to compete there, even if they had already played in Istanbul.

1 Serena Williams , Agnieszka Radwańska , Li Na , Sara Errani , Jelena Janković and Angelique Kerber were qualified for the WTA Championships 2013 in Istanbul and therefore not eligible to play in Sofia.
2 Caroline Wozniacki qualified as a substitute for Istanbul in 2013 and competed in Sofia. She decided against participating in Sofia.
3 Also, Roberta Vinci , however, was qualified, decided not to participate in Sofia.
4 Elina Switolina replaced Marija Kirilenko from the second group game on , who had to retire in the first match due to an injury and was unable to play a game again.

Competition mode

In the round-robin phase (Engl. Round Robin) play four players in two groups, each against all. The top two in each group qualify for the semi-finals, which will be played according to the knockout system . The winner of one group plays against the second in the other group, the winners of both games play the final.
