Yvonne Meusburger-Garamszegi (born October 3, 1983 in Dornbirn ; Yvonne Meusburger until July 2016 ) is a former Austrian tennis player .

Career

Meusburger competed in ITF tournaments at the beginning of her career . She won 15 singles and nine doubles there.

From the end of 2006 it was able to increase significantly. Within a short period of time she won ITF titles in Mexico City , Puebla and Biberach an der Riss . At WTA level, she played in Auckland from qualification to the second round and in Indian Wells (Tier I), also as a qualifier, up to the third round, in which she failed against former world number one Martina Hingis . This was followed by winning the Challenger tournament in Italian Latina .

At the tournament in Prague, Meusburger managed to beat number 40 in the world rankings, Michaëlla Krajicek . She moved into the top 100 in the WTA ranking for the first time, which means she was qualified for the French Open. There she lost to Francesca Schiavone in the first round .

At the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon , it continued its upward trend. In the first round she defeated Virginie Razzano 6: 4, 7: 5, in the second round she then lost to Amélie Mauresmo with 1: 6, 2: 6.

At the home tournament in Bad Gastein , Meusburger defeated the number two seeded Émilie Loit 6: 1, 6: 3 in the first round . Also in the last sixteen and in the quarter-finals, she beat her opponents Eva Birnerová (6: 4, 6: 1) and Lourdes Domínguez Lino (6: 1, 6: 4) and made it into her first WTA semi-final. There she faced one of the climbers of the year with Karin Knapp . Meusburger had the upper hand here too and won 6: 1, 3: 6, 6: 3. However, she lost her first WTA final against top seeded Francesca Schiavone with 1: 6, 4: 6.

After the success in Bad Gastein, which brought in 60th place in the world rankings, numerous defeats at the beginning followed. Only at the tournament in Linz was she able to prevail in the first round against her compatriot Melanie Klaffner before she failed in the second round to Nicole Vaidišová .

At the beginning of 2008 she reached the second round in Auckland . At the Australian Open , she started with a win over Laura Granville , but then lost to Ekaterina Makarova in two sets in round two .

In Latin America she was able to reach the round of 16 at the tournaments in Bogota (COL) and Acapulco (MEX). Then she lost both at the tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami and at the French Open, in Estoril and in Prague in the first round. In Prague she had to endure the maximum penalty of 0: 6, 0: 6 against Katarina Srebotnik . In Estoril she lost to Flavia Pennetta after winning the first set 6: 4, 0: 6, 2: 6. At the French Open, she had no chance against Caroline Wozniacki .

It only went up again at the Challenger level in Rome (Tiro a Volo), when she only lost to the top seeded Tathiana Garbin in the final . She also reached the quarter-finals in Cuneo, Italy, and in Zagreb she had to admit defeat to local hero Petra Martić in the second Challenger final in 2008 after she had defeated three seeded Jelena Kostanić Tošić in the semifinals . In between there was an opening defeat at Wimbledon against Edina Gallovits (1: 6, 2: 6), and in Zlin, Czech Republic, she failed 6: 7 in the third set against Polona Hercog .

At the home tournament in Bad Gastein, Meusburger made it to the quarter-finals, where she had to admit defeat to the eventual tournament winner Pauline Parmentier . This was followed by an unsatisfactory elimination in the second round at the Challenger tournament in Petange (LUX). In Bronx (USA) she reached the quarterfinals. At the US Open she had to admit defeat to Srebotnik again after a clear victory over Lourdes Domínguez Lino in round two. Then she received clear opening defeats at the two $ 100,000 Challenger tournaments in Sofia (BUL) and Ortisei (ITA). At the WTA tournament in Linz she was also defeated by Dominika Cibulková 4: 6, 2: 6 in round one . At the ITF tournaments in Bratislava and Ismaning, she was eliminated in the first round. Thus, the opening win at the US Open was the last match win for her in 2008.

Meusburger opened the 2009 season with qualification in Auckland, but lost to Alberta Brianti in the third round . A week later, they failed in the second qualifying round in Sydney to Meng Yuan . At the Australian Open she was defeated in the first round of the world number one Jelena Janković with 1: 6, 3: 6. In the summer she won the ITF tournaments in Hechingen and Tranava, where she was also successful in the double competition in Hechingen together with Jasmin Wöhr .

2013 was Meusburger's most successful year. After several victories at Challenger tournaments, she not only managed to reach the finals in Budapest, where she lost to Simona Halep in three sets ; she also reached her second final in Bad Gastein. In contrast to her first appearance there in 2007, this time she was able to assert herself in two sets (against Andrea Hlaváčková ) and thus win her first WTA title. She finished the 2013 season as number 50.

In 2014 she reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open . She defeated Chanelle Scheepers and Bojana Jovanovski , before she was eliminated in the third round with 0: 6 and 1: 6 against number two, Wiktoryja Asaranka . On March 31, 2014, she reached number 37, her best placement in the WTA ranking to date. After the first round at the US Open , she announced the end of her career. In January 2015, she played the Australian Open for the last time, but was eliminated in the first round.

Fed Cup

From 2003 to 2014 Meusburger played for the Austrian Fed Cup team . Her first assignment was alongside Sybille Bammer (loss to the duo Kim Clijsters / Els Callens ). In 2004 she lost both singles in the semifinals against Russia (against Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastassia Myskina ). In 2005 she defeated Nathalie Dechy in the game against France , but lost to Virginie Razzano . Even when they played against Switzerland , there was a victory and a defeat. In 2006 in the match against Spain she lost to Anabel Medina Garrigues or (in doubles with Bammer) to Virginia Ruano Pascual and Lourdes Domínguez Lino . When the Austrian team played against Israel for promotion to World Group 1, they suffered two major defeats. Since Austria's number 1, Sybille Bammer, was ill, Meusburger had to stand in for her in the individual. They were defeated by Shahar Peer and Tzipora Obziler 3: 6, 1: 6 respectively. A strained stomach muscle and an operation to remove the wisdom teeth that she had endured a few days earlier were bothersome. In 2007 she was only used against Australia in doubles, in which she did not prevail, like against Israel. The Fed Cup performance against Argentina was also unsatisfactory; the number one of the Austrian team clearly lost against the little-known Jorgelina Cravero . Meusburger's Fed Cup record: eight wins and 21 defeats.

Sporting successes

In April 2014, Yvonne Meusburger was voted Vorarlberg's “Sportswoman of the Year”.
