Ana Isabel "Anabel" Medina Garrigues (born July 31, 1982 in Valencia ) is a former Spanish tennis player . From 2018 she will be the captain of the Spanish Fed Cup team .
Career
Anabel Medina Garrigues, who started playing tennis with her family at the age of seven, prefers hard courts for her game.
Medina Garrigues won 28 doubles titles in her career. She secured five of her eleven individual successes in Palermo and three in Strasbourg. She reached her highest position in the WTA world rankings with rank 16 in May 2009. She achieved her best results in Grand Slam tournaments when she reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 2002 and 2009 and at the French Open in 2007 .
In November 2008, Medina Garrigues was number 3 in the double world rankings. She celebrated her greatest successes alongside Virginia Ruano Pascual , with whom she won the French Open title in 2008 and 2009, respectively . In 2008 she won the silver medal at their side at the Olympic Games in Beijing . At the US Open she reached the semi-finals in doubles again in 2012, which she lost with her partner Hsieh Su-wei against Lucie Hradecká and Andrea Hlaváčková 6: 7, 2 and 4: 6.
In 2013 she won the Hopman Cup for Spain together with Fernando Verdasco . In the final they defeated Serbia 2-1.
From 2003 Medina Garrigues also played for the Spanish Fed Cup team ; their record shows 18 wins and 16 defeats.
Since May 2017, Medina Garrigues was the coach of Jeļena Ostapenko , who surprisingly won the individual title of the French Open just a few weeks later .
After the US Open 2018 , she ended her career.
