Alexandra Dulgheru (born May 30, 1989 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian tennis player .

Career

Alexandra Dulgheru, who started playing tennis at the age of four, prefers hard courts. In May 2005 she became a professional player. Since 2010 she has played 15 games (7 wins) for the Romanian Fed Cup team .

She won her first title on the WTA Tour in Warsaw in 2009 . Only when she got into the main draw through qualification, she defeated Aljona Bondarenko 7: 6, 3 , 3: 6, 6: 0 in the final . With her victory over the defending champion, the world number three Dinara Safina, she caused a surprise at the Italian Open in Rome in 2010 . On May 22nd, she was able to defend her title from the previous year in Warsaw; in the final she prevailed 6: 3 and 6: 4 against Zheng Jie from China.

The year 2011 began for Dulgheru with first round defeats at the Australian Open and the WTA tournaments in Sydney , Dubai and Indian Wells . It was only in Miami that she was able to build on her performance from the previous season. After a bye in the first round, she advanced to the quarterfinals with straight wins over Chanelle Scheepers , Johanna Larsson and Peng Shuai , in which she was defeated by Maria Sharapova 6: 3, 6: 7, 6: 7 in her longest career match to date.

She saw one reason for her sudden upturn in performance, above all, in the collaboration with her new coach Gabriel Urpi, who has looked after Flavia Pennetta for many years and made her the first player in her country to make it into the top 10 in the world rankings.

Because of recurring knee problems, she was unable to confirm her successes on sand from the previous year. Her best result was the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Brussels , where she had to admit defeat to Vera Swonaryova 0: 6, 1: 6. At the French Open and Wimbledon , she lost in the second round in 2011. After the lawn season she took a regeneration break of several weeks. At the US Open she caused a sensation with her two-set win over the newly crowned Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová on the first day of the game. Not yet in top shape, however, she lost her next game against compatriot Monica Niculescu 3: 6 and 0: 6.

With her task against Svetlana Kuznetsova at the WTA tournament in Beijing , new injury problems began. In March 2012, she had to give up the tournament in Indian Wells and take a break. In November she played a few ITF tournaments before returning to the WTA Tour in Indian Wells in 2013 . In 2014 she won two individual titles at major ITF tournaments; from July 2014 she only competed in the individual competition. In the spring of 2015, she made an exclamation mark when she reached the final at the WTA tournament in Kuala Lumpur . Although she lost to Caroline Wozniacki in three sets, she returned to the top 100 when she entered the finals.
