Hódmezővásárhely [ ˈhoːdmɛzøːvaːʃaːrhɛj ] ( German Neumarkt an der Tisza ) is a Hungarian city with county rights in the district of the same name in Csongrád-Csanád county . It extends over an area of 487.98 km² and has 47,019 inhabitants (as of 2011). The main road No. 47 runs through the city .
Hódmezővásárhely is the fourth largest city in southern Hungary. The Hungarian name means "Biberfeld-Marktplatz" after the two places that make up the city historically. The city is located about 25 km northeast of Szeged .
history
In February 2018, the independent candidate Péter Márki-Zay won the election for mayor. The unexpected victory against the Fidesz candidate attracted international attention, as this victory could have been significant for the Hungarian parliamentary elections in April 2018 . In the Fidesz stronghold, none of the other parties had put up any candidates.
economy
In connection with the local industry it is noteworthy: In Hódmezővásárhely a large number of Moomin products with the Finnish cartoon characters of the same name are produced (which, however, can only be sold in Finland). Hódmezővásárhely is particularly known in this context for the so-called "little Moomins".
Piroschka
The city became known in German-speaking countries through its (former) district Hódmezővásárhelykutasipuszta from the novel I often think of Piroschka by Hugo Hartung (also made into a film by Kurt Hoffmann ). The actual name was Hódmezővásárhely-Kutaspuszta until 1949 . On January 1, 1950, the village under the name Vásárhelykutas was an independent municipality, which was renamed Székkutas a little later . Székkutas is located about 25 km northeast of Hódmezővásárhely on the Békéscsaba - Orosháza –Hódmezővásárhely railway line . Since 2004 there has been a Hugo Hartung / Piroschka Museum in Székkutas.
