János Lázár

János Lázár (born February 19, 1975 in Hódmezővásárhely ) is a Hungarian politician of Fidesz - Hungarian Citizens' Union .

Life

Lázár studied at the University of Sciences in Szeged . Since May 2002 he has been a member of the Hungarian Parliament . From October 20, 2002 to September 6, 2012 he was the successor to András Rapcsák mayor of Hódmezővásárhely. From June 6, 2014 to May 18, 2018, Lázár was head of the State Chancellery in the Orbán III cabinet . He is married to the teacher Zita Megyeri and has two children.

Controversy

In 2011 several newspapers reported that Lázár was using an Audi S8 as a company car, the rent of which costs around 2000 euros per month and was partly financed by the local self-government. Since this became public, Lázár no longer uses the car, which incidentally had a lightning protection system built into it. According to the politician, no such system would be installed in his next car.

In 2011 a video recording appeared in which Lázár formulated the sentence “whoever has nothing is also worth so much”.

Lázár later apologized for his comment and added that he had been misunderstood, namely that he was thinking of professional politicians and not the poor.

In 2014 it became known that in the name of Lázár's ten-year-old son a house was entered in the land register, which is worth 60–70 million forints. According to Lázár, he was able to buy the house "with the support of the family" and on the basis of savings.

In 2018 it also became known that a Hungarian company, owned by Viktor Orbán's son-in-law, received a striking number of orders with EU subsidies. An EU agency, the European Anti-Fraud Office (Olaf), launched an investigation and drafted and sent a report to Budapest. Accordingly, Olaf checked 35 orders that went to Elios and discovered irregularities in each of them. In 17 cases, EU officials speak of organized fraud. The government is taciturn about it: It is just an election campaign, says Orbán's head of cabinet János Lázár, for example, without going any further. In 2010, Hódmezővásárhely was the city that awarded Elios the first and one of the largest orders, back when János Lázár was still mayor there.
