Ernst Norlind
Ernst Ludvig Norlind (born April 25, 1877 in Vellinge , † December 16, 1952 on Borgeby slott , Lomma near Lund ) was a Swedish painter and writer .
Life
Ernst Norlind in 1877 as the son of the pastor Lars Christenson and his wife Johanna Norlind in Vellinge, a community in the southern Swedish province of Skåne (Skåne) . Like his four siblings, he bore his mother's more distinctive name. After leaving school at the school of the cathedral in Lund , he spent three years studying at the local university with a bachelor's degree in 1898. Norlind went in 1901 for a year in Germany, where he at Adolf Hölzel at the " Dachau took lessons painting school". After returning to his homeland due to illness, he was again with Hölzel in Dachau in 1902/03.
In 1904 Norlind was at Borgeby Castle, a place known for its cultural salons, since 1888 belonging to his future wife Hanna Larsdotter (1866–1953). Here, as a host, he met literary guests such as the Swedish educator and writer Ellen Key and Rainer Maria Rilke, who was on friendly terms with her . The painter Tora Vega Holmström and later the writers Anders Österling and Birger Sjöberg were also guests here. In 1905 he stayed in Paris for further studies, where he made the acquaintance of Auguste Rodin thanks to Rilke . In 1907 he married Hanna Larsdotter, their son Staffan was born in 1909. Around 1911 his teacher Hölzel came to visit Borgeby with his wife.
Norlind was a versatile artist involved in a wide variety of cultural activities in Skåne. It was he who immortalized the landscape of Skåne in paintings, charcoal drawings and various graphic techniques. He also painted many motifs from the world of birds, especially storks, and was popularly known as the “painter of storks”. He also wrote poems, memoirs and novels. In the 1930s, during a period of depression, he went to Assisi for more than two years, looking for the “poetic solitude”, the humility of the Franciscan tradition. Norlind was also a musician, he played the violin and became a popular radio storyteller in the 1940s. Ernst Norlind died in 1952 at the age of 75 at Borgeby Castle. After the death of his son Staffan (1909–1978), who also worked as a painter, the castle was converted into a foundation. Today, Norlind's work is shown there in a museum. Norlind's works are represented in the National Museum and Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm, Gothenburg Museum of Art and Malmö Museum .
Ernst Ludvig Norlind's siblings also became known in some cases: Tobias Norlind (1879–1947) as a music historian, museum director and author; Arnold Norlind (1883–1929) as a lecturer, geographer, author and translator. The other siblings were the older sister Laura Concordia Norlind (1875-1960) and the youngest brother Josef Yngve Vallentin Norlind (1887-1976).
