Arnold Gottfrid Norlind (born June 17, 1883 in Vellinge , † February 17, 1929 in Järfälla , Stockholm County ) was a Swedish geographer, translator and writer .

Life

Arnold Norlind was born in 1883 as the son of pastor Lars Christenson and his wife Johanna Norlind in Vellinge, a municipality in the southern Swedish province of Schonen (Skåne) . Like his four siblings, he bore his mother's more distinctive name. After school he studied at the University in Lund , initial three-year 1903. The further studies in geography, astronomy, Romance languages, literature, art history, history, German and aesthetics were the bachelor's degree in 1912 with the Dr. phil. completed. He then worked as a lecturer in geography in Lund from 1912.

After the expiry of his teaching fellowship in 1922, Norlind finished teaching at the university and became a teacher at Birkagårdens Volkshochschule (folkhögskola) in Stockholm. In 1922 he married the writer Emilia Maria Fogelklou (1878–1972). Norlind was not granted a long life, he fell ill with tuberculosis and died at the age of 45.

Arnold Norlind's siblings also became known in part: his older brothers Ernst Norlind (1877–1952) as a painter and author; Tobias Norlind (1879–1947) as music historian, museum director and author. The other siblings were the older sister Laura Concordia Norlind (1875-1960) and the younger brother Josef Yngve Vallentin Norlind (1887-1976).

In the first years of his work, scientific work on geography, explorers or colonization was his subject. After his travels, made out of geographical interest, a number of popular scientific works were created. His endeavor was not to write adventure stories, but to use his scientific knowledge of geography to depict the journeys of explorers such as Henrik sjöfararen or Fernäo de Magalhäes . The most important part of his work for Norlind were his works on Dante Alighieri , translations and, based on his own knowledge, reinterpretations of Dante's life and works from a philosophical and psychological perspective.
