Sokobanja ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сокобања ) is a Serbian spa town in the municipality of the same name in the Zaječar district .

The annual accordion festival Prva harmonika is held here and the Milošev konak restaurant, famous in the Timočka Krajina region , is located here.

geography

The place is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Serbia , located between the Rtanj and Ozren Mountains . The Sokobanjska Moravica River flows through the village with a large variety of fish . The remains of the Roman fortress of Sokograd can be found nearby . West of Sokobanja is the Bovansko Jezero , an artificial lake that is also used for tourism.

history

The center of the city was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century . There are also numerous hammams (Turkish baths). The local school and the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration were built in the 19th century .

In 2002 the city had 8,407 inhabitants (self-denomination). Most of them were Serbian Orthodox .
