The Rtanj ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ртањ ) is a seven-kilometer mountain range in eastern Serbia . It is counted among the Carpathians . The mountain range is part of an approximately 125 km² nature reserve , the border of which is formed in the east by the Crni Timok and the Boljevac - Rujište line . The mountain range consists of limestone , Paleozoic slate and sandstone . In the altitude range between 700 and 950 meters there is a not very thick layer of dolomite . In this area there is a continental mountain climate , it is determined by a mixed forest of firs and beeches , as well as some meadows.

The highest mountain is the Šiljak at 1,565 m , on the top of which there are the ruins of a chapel. Some believed that its pyramidal shape could save the mountain from the end of the world on December 21, 2012 , which the Maya calendar supposedly predicted .

Flora and fauna

The predominant habitat types are old mixed forest as well as wild or hardly cultivated, plant-rich meadows on limestone soils. In this area, 26 different plant communities and 644 plant species have been counted, 25 of which are endemic .

Knowledge of the fauna is assessed as satisfactory and the presence of 102 different animal species has been proven. Among them are the butterflies Quendel- and blue gentian , meadowsweet-mother-of-pearl and Esperarge climene which are of particular importance in Serbia. The following types of dragonflies also occur: banded demoiselle , autumn damsel , large damsel and striped damsel . Hawk , sparrowhawk , buzzard , wood pigeon and green woodpecker have been identified in the birds, and the field shrew , western blind vole , European mole and squirrel in the mammals .

The biodiversity is considered to be comparatively well preserved, there is only a minor influence of humans, this consists mainly in the timber industry and the collecting of medicinal plants . The Rtanjski čaj or Rtanjtee - herbal tea from the autochthonous Satureja kitaibelii from the genus of savory herbs - comes from this region.

Grazing and use as a recreational area are negligible. Since 1958 the area has the status of a nature reserve ( Rezervata prirode ).
