The striped swell maiden ( Cordulegaster bidentata ) is 8 cm long and has a wingspan of 10 cm. Outwardly, this type of spring damsel is very similar to the two-striped spring damsel ( Cordulegaster boltonii ), but there is only a horizontal stripe on the middle abdominal ring and the occiput triangle is only black.
habitat
This type of dragonfly occurs in cool, oxygen-rich streams and their springs, mostly in tiny spring rivulets. Typical and often overlooked larval waters are spring outlets with limestone tufa deposits that are overgrown by moss cushions and form small, easily flowed through water basins. In low mountain ranges, such waters freeze over completely in winter. The larval development can therefore take up to five years. In contrast to the two-striped spring damsel, the adults do not move very far from their waters. In Central Europe this species occurs only like islands and is strongly threatened by humans. However, their population will be larger than currently assumed, as there are certainly still undiscovered occurrences in the low mountain ranges.
Reproduction
In years with average weather, the flight time is between the end of May and mid-July, but can also extend to the end of August. Mating and oviposition take place in the same way as with the two-striped spring damsel. The overall development takes 3 to 5 years.
