Stevan Sremac , Cyrillic Стеван Сремац (born November 11 . Jul / 23. November  1855 greg. In Senta , Backa ; † August 12 jul. / 25. August  1906 greg. In Sokobanja ) was a Serbian writer.

Life

Sremac attended school in his hometown. After the death of his parents, he studied in Belgrade and became a teacher. As such, he worked all his life in the southern Serbian cities of Niš and Sokobanja, where he began to write relatively late, at the age of 33. Politically, Sremac was a supporter of the Liberal Party, a strictly nationalist party that supported the monarchy in Serbia under the Obrenović dynasty .

Works

Sremac was one of the main exponents of Serbian realism. He mainly wrote prose works, which describe the social conditions in Serbia in a humorous way, whereby his sympathy was the traditional, patriarchal conditions, but without idealizing them.
